When you're on a diet, your main focus is the pounds you're losing. However, it does sometimes get difficult and annoying to work towards getting to your ideal weight.
You may hate having to take less of your favorite foods. You whimper at the idea of drastically cutting down your portion sizes.
Sometimes, the extra pounds seem to take a long time to fall off, and that is not a happy place to be. This can leave you feeling desperate, sad and anxious about whether or not you'll ever get to where you want to be in regards to dieting goals.
If you're working towards getting your ideal weight, the right attitude is a big part of your progress. There are some actions you can take to prevent yourself from giving in to your negative feelings and eventually not achieving your goal. You have to be your very own motivational coach - nobody else can do this.
How do you ensure that you keep yourself on the road to healthy weight-loss?
Don't Be In A Hurry
You must realize that losing that extra weight will not happen in one day; it is a journey that requires commitment. You have to give your body time to get used to a new normal. It won't like the diet and exercise regimen that you've put it on. Sometimes you'll be right on track, and other times you'll be ready to give up.
You need to understand yourself and understand what works best for you, and then follow through each day.
Plan each day out so that your meals and any exercise fit into your normal schedule. Don't try to drastically change your normal day because of your weight loss goals. If you do this, you could find yourself never being able to meet your goals, and you'll eventually give up.
Get Rid of Extremist Thoughts
When you really want to lose weight, you can sometimes become desperate. And when you're desperate, you could talk yourself into taking drastic measures to get the weight off.
You don't want to go that route. It never results in long-term weight loss. It simply causes you to fail repeatedly. You want to lose the weight and keep it off for good.
Healthy weight loss does not happen instantly. Nobody wants to hear that. They want to hear about how they can lose 15 pounds in a week and fit into that slinky little black dress for their high school reunion.
The truth is, when you take drastic measures like under-eating continuously, you're sending signals to your body that something's wrong. Your body will then hang on to the fat stores because it thinks it needs to help you survive.
Set and celebrate Attainable Goals
As you move towards your ideal weight, it is a good idea to set some goals and then reward yourself when you achieve them. Don't set unattainable goals and then throw up your hands in defeat when you don't succeed!
Set small goals to begin with so that you're celebrating constantly. Goals like "Eat 2 fruits and vegetables a day" or "lose 1 pound this week" set you up for success. Goals like, "lose 10 pounds this week" or "eat 800 calories a day" are a recipe for disaster.
On the other hand, if you commit to doing exercise three times a week and you only manage to get it done once or twice, don't beat yourself about it. Look forward to getting more done the following week.
Never beat yourself up. Self love and forgiveness can help you get at the root of the issue and nurture yourself back to a point where you're being more mindful of your nutrition and exercise regimen.
Don't allow your friends to influence your thoughts
For some reason, we think we need to announce it when we go on a diet or exercise program. People will announce the date they're starting, which program they're using, and how they feel about it.
If you need an accountability partner, you can get one of those. If other people come along for the ride uninvited, you need to know how to put boundaries in place to keep their influence out.
If you're changing your eating habits and someone offers you candy from the vending machine, just say, "No thanks!" No explanation is needed. The key point to remember here is that you're your own critic - don't allow anyone else to do that for you. Always compare yourself to yourself to keep your spirits high and your focus on a healthier you strong.
Dieting depression is a real problem, and it can happen to everyone if you're not careful. You can put yourself in that dark place if you allow outside influences or if you beat yourself up for every single thing you don't manage to do, so be aware of your mindset at all times.
