Installation of a tooth implant is not an easy feat. A successful implantation requires meticulous planning and careful execution of procedures. A error made somewhere in the process could lead to potentially disastrous results.
5 basic steps in installation of dental implants
Dental implants are basically dental fixtures that act as orthodontic anchors for dental prostheses such as bridges, crowns and dentures. Dentists follow a set of steps to ensure that placement of these implants is performed properly.
Reflection of gum tissue. A surgical incision is made above the apex of the bone, and in the process dividing a thick portion of gum tissue nearly in half. The sides of the gingival tissue are then retracted to expose the underlying bone. There are also incidences wherein only a small amount of soft tissue, roughly the size of the implant is removed to make way for implantation.
High speed drilling of the bone tissue. Pilot holes are then drilled into the exposed bone. The dentist meticulously monitors the drill's speed to prevent burning or death of the bone tissues.
Low speed drilling. Using progressively wider drill bits, the dentist widens the diameter of the pilot holes. The dentist drills at a relatively slower speed. The bone is constantly sprayed with saline solution or sterile water to prevent it from overheating.
Installation of the tooth implant. The dental implant is then screwed into place using a torque controlled drill. The dentist uses a precise amount of torque to prevent the cell death of surrounding bone tissue.
Soft tissue integration. A healing abutment is immediately attached after a dental implant has been installed. Both the implant and the abutment are then enclosed with healthy gingival tissue. In some cases, a cover screw is placed at the top of an implant along with bands of soft tissue to completely seal it.
Recovery and rehabilitation period
For a dental implant to become perpetually secure, it must first undergo the biological process of osseointegration. This is a process wherein an implant permanently fuses with a bone. Osseointegration takes a alterable amount of time, depending to a large extent on the client's health status. Dentists usually give their clients around 3 to 6 months of healing or integration time before they attach a dental prosthesis. The reason for this is that attaching a dental fixture to the implants within the integration period could increase the risk of implantation failure.
Nonetheless, many researchers suggest that the early immovability of a tooth implant is a more important factor in determining the success of implantation therapy than length of integration time. They also suggest that the amount of integration time necessary is highly dependent on a number of factors including the individual's health, the density of his bone and the quality of health practices he performs.
Placement of dental prostheses
After a considerable amount of time has passed, the client returns to his dentist for a general evaluation. His dentist will then assess the status of the implants and see whether or not it is fit for placement or not. Dental prostheses are only installed when the dentist determines that the implant has totally integrated with the bone.
