People are not actually feeling it immediately, but the skin is constantly being damaged by the sun. Those who work outdoors, enjoy sun bathing and surfing are at higher risks for skin damage. Moreover, people with red and blonde hairs are in danger of developing skin cancer due to constant and unprotected sun exposure.
The sun's adverse effects peak from 10 AM to 4 PM. Two kinds of rays reach the earth: the UVB ray and the UVA ray. These rays are invisible to the naked eye. UVB rays are composed of short wavelengths that reach the superficial layers of the skin such as the epidermis. Exposure to the sun's UVB rays account for sunburn and skin darkening because melanin, specifically eumelanin, is situated in the epidermis. UVB rays have a low penetration capability therefore it can't go through glass. The other kind of UV ray, the UVA rays are more notorious than UVB rays.
UVA rays are composed of long wavelengths therefore they can penetrate glass and even clouds. Moreover, UVA rays penetrate deeper layers of the skin such as the dermis, and cause premature aging, wrinkles, skin cancer (melanoma) and dark spots. Aside from damaging the dermis, UVA rays fully penetrate to the deep layer of the epidermis and damage the skin's keratinocytes, a group of cells that protects against environmental damage. It is also where skin cancer starts.
How to Prevent Sun Damage
The easiest way to prevent sun damage is to wear broad spectrum sunblock with an SPF of at least 15 30 minutes before exposure to sun. SPF protects against UVB rays. Protection against UVA rays are indicated by PA+, PA++ and PA+++. Broad spectrum means the sunblock has both SPF and PA protection.
Sun Damaged Skin Repair
Sun damaged skin repair requires a dose of oral and topical care. If you have not been wearing a broad spectrum sunblock, start today. Sun damage will begin to show up in the forties so the amount of care you invest in skin care will reflect later on. The following vitamins are excellent for skin damaged skin repair, whether they are taken orally or topically.
Vitamin C
Aside from contributing to a strong immune system, vitamin C plays a major role in collagen production. It is even much more effective when it is topically applied. Serums are the most ideal source of topical vitamin C as serums have concentrated forms of active ingredients. Because vitamin C serums can be drying, it is best used with Hyaluronic acid for moisture.
Vitamin A
The topical form of vitamin A, retinoid, is effectively used to diminish wrinkles, dark spots and rough sun-damaged skin.
MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane)
This organic sulfur compound effectively aids rosacea, melasma, joint problems and sun damage. MSM can be taken orally or topically. When combined with Vitamin C, MSM delivers a better sun damaged skin repair.
