They are one of the best forms of exercise for A.S sufferers because they work all the muscles but at a very light weight, and they provide a good stretch.
Lastly, see a rheumatologist and in the event that you need pain medication, he will prescribe what he thinks is ideal. There are some great injections out there that really work, but very costly. The most important thing is to keep an eye on your inflammation levels (CRP) by blood test, and if they fall to 0-15, that's a sign that your diet and exercise is working, and you can easily reduce your medication.
