Being toxic to the fish, pesticides may cause death to the koi if not given proper deterrent action. To avoid this, one should carefully plan out the location of the fish pond prior to building. This is one of the reasons why placement of the pond is crucial. If this problem occurs after the planning phase, it would be a great idea to redirect the stream flow of rain using a drain. This way, pesticides from plants carried down by the rain will not reach the pond, thus securing excellent koi care.

Fish in general is an easy target for cats, raccoons, huge birds, and basically almost any kind of animal. Keeping an eye out for predators is essential in koi care. It is quite impossible to have someone watch the pond 24/7. And so, if your pond is prone to be scavenged by predators; be it a neighbor's wandering cat or a strange bird that's been lurking around the yard lately, it is advised to use a bird net over the pond or a fence around it.

When leaving the house, make sure to cover the pond with the net to keep scavengers away. This also helps to prevent the fish from jumping out of the water. Koi fishes are known jumpers. Fishes jump out of water usually when chasing food, chasing each other or just simply not content with their environment. There are times when the fish does not make it back into the water after jumping. This causes death. Placing a net over the pond prevents the fish from landing into rocks and other dangerous objects and ensures that they safely make it back into the water.

Lastly, the most important element in koi care is the quality of the water. The quality of the water decides the koi's life span. To ensure high quality of the water, one must install a proper filtration system for the pond; do regular testing on the water to check for possible parasites and maintain the adequate amount of fish in the pond. To guarantee absolute koi care, one must eliminate these hazards for a happy, healthy koi fish pond.
