Nitrites and nitrates, on the other hand, are detrimental to the nervous and immune systems of the koi fishes. Install a good filtration system to keep the water in good condition and prevent problems in koi heath.

Also, like human beings, koi fishes are in dire need of oxygen. It is advised to keep the oxygen levels at a minimum of 5.0mg/L per koi. However, it should be remembered that cold water will be able to hold greater amounts of dissolved oxygen compared to warm water so it is best to put an aeration system or a miniature waterfalls. This will increase the supply of oxygen for the fishes and help its distribution over the pond. Owners should also prevent overcrowding the koi fishes. They will be competing not only for space but also for oxygen.

A common problem in koi health is the development of ulcers. These are the red damaged spots on their body. They are usually caused by the contact of their bodies with the chemicals that have collected on their habitat. Stones and other hard objects lining the pond may also injure them. Ulcers should be taken seriously since they can lead to the death of the koi fishes. There are several measures that can be taken to prevent this. Owners can have their sick koi injected with a medicine or fed with a special medication feed, or have the pond treated with antibiotics.

Koi health can also be put in danger by parasites. In most cases, owners notice this problem once the fishes already manifest signs and symptoms. These might include lack of or reduced activity, loss of appetite and dulling of the pattern and base colors. At this point, the problem might already be very severe. However, there is no need to worry since this can easily be solved. To control the parasitic infection within the pond, add an anti-parasitic treatment mixture on the water. ask the help an expert if necessary.
