Many people are interested in koi fishes. They have bright and beautiful patterns which are all very pleasing to the eyes. Aside from that, some even believe that each type has its own unique koi fish meaning. However, regardless of being a quite a commonplace, some basic facts about them are yet to be familiar to all. This article is dedicated to them.
Koi fishes, otherwise known as nishikigoi, are the domestic form of the common carp. they originally came from the East Asia. They are commonly kept as house pets for their very attractive colors. Owners usually put them on outdoor fresh water ponds because koi fishes can grow up to more than four feet. Their average life span is from 15 to 20 years but some of them can live longer.
They are poikilothermic or cold-blooded, meaning their body temperature changes depending on the temperature of their surroundings. This also affects their behavior and responses. Their activity heightens in warm temperature and slows down in cold temperature. They are also omnivorous, meaning they eat food from both animal and plant sources. There are commercial koi feeds which already offer all the nutrients that they need in only one formula.
During summer, when the temperature is warm enough, their metabolism is fast. It is then advised to feed them with high-protein food during this time. This will help them grow and develop their body. On winter, the rate of their metabolism is significantly slowed. They find it difficult, if not totally unable, to digest food. Give them feeds that they can easily break down like wheat germ-based koi food.
There are more than 20 different types of koi fish. They can be identified through their patterns, colors and scales. Usually, their patterns come in white, black, red, and orange colors. Below is the description of some of them.
Kohaku is probably the most popular kind of koi fish. Their base is of solid white color, blotted with red patterns. Looking at their body will help owners identify their quality and health. Good ones are those with vibrant and flawless white base covered with evenly distributed vivid red patterns.
Taisho Sanke, another variety of koi, also has a white base. It is very much the same with Kohaku. The only difference is the additional black spots that comes with the red patterns.
Tancho, a famous variation of Kohaku, also has white base but only a single red spot on its head. A high-quality Tancho is one with a symmetrical and nicely placed mark. It is popular among hobbyists for its resemblance with the Red-Crowned Crane.
Hi Utsuri, on the other hand, has a black base. Vibrant red and orange spots adorn the base. Young Hi Utsuris usually have dreary patterns but as they mature, their patterns turn a brighter and more beautiful shade of red. It is believed that red Hi Utsuri koi fishes are superior compared to the orange ones.
Despite their differences, the many types of koi are all beautiful and special in their own way. People should learn to appreciate them more and take care of them better. Their unique patterns remind people of their uniqueness, beauty and special distinctions too.
