There are two types of supplements containing melatonin: time release (or controlled release) and regular release. Most people don't know the difference between these two. This article aims to show how the two differ, and which type of melatonin supplement is better for your needs.
Before anything else, please keep in mind that melatonin does not control the sleep-wake cycle; it is bright light that takes this role. Sleep disorders related with the circadian rhythm don't have problems with levels of melatonin but with errors as to when they are produced. Melatonin time release and regular release capsules are taken to ensure that enough melatonin is produced at the right time of day.
Consider the following questions, and plan accordingly.
1. How long does it take you to sleep?
In order to induce sleep, most people resort to taking melatonin. Time release capsules help induce sleep for people who take more than an hour to sleep. Ensure that these capsules are high-quality, standardized melatonin supplements. Take the lowest dose and never cut them in half! This is because these supplements are coated with a slow release formula. Cutting them will be detrimental to this purpose. On the other hand, regular dose melatonin tablets are for people who take less than one hour to sleep. These tablets can be cut in half.
2. When should you take the capsules?
Taking these capsules differ for the two types of melatonin. Time release capsules should be taken one to three hours before your normal sleeping time, depending on how severe your sleeping problem is. Remember that these capsules are effective for only three to four hours, so you may need to take another capsule if you want to shift your sleep for more than three hours. On the other hand, regular release capsules should only be taken one to two hours before the desired sleeping time.
3. Do you frequently wake up at night or experience early morning insomnia?
If yes, you probably need two doses of melatonin, time release and sublingual capsules, to fall back asleep. Sublingual tablets are placed under the tongue; melatonin is subsequently discharged immediately to the blood stream without the need to pass through the digestive system, allowing them to be used by the body more quickly . If these nighttime awakenings last less than one hour, take the time release tablet first then place the sublingual tablet under your tongue afterwards.
However, if you need to wake up within two to three hours, the regular release capsule is much better than the time release one. The effects of the latter can reach until your waking hours and make you confused and moody.
A Last Note
Despite these differences, please be advised to never take melatonin, time release or regular release, when your eyes are exposed to bright daylight or artificial light. As stated earlier, bright light is the main regulator of the sleep-wake cycle, so exposure to bright light could cancel out the supposed effects of taking melatonin. Also, avoid these when driving. Never take these for longer than two weeks at a time to avoid adverse side-effects like dependency.
