Have you ever taken melatonin pills to alleviate your problems in sleeping? Many have, and a number of these people find that taking a single pill is ineffective for them. What causes people to need larger doses of melatonin?
Melatonin is a hormone naturally produced by the body which, when stimulated by the absence of light , aids the body maintain a regular sleep-wake cycle. - 10-20mg daily together with chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or interleukin-2 for solid tumors;
- 20mg daily with 3.75mg triptorelin every 28 days as treatment for metastatic cancer;
- 20mg for prevention of thrombocytopenia (lowered clot-forming cells) due to cancer therapy; and,
- 10mg in the evening to prevent cluster headaches.
The following instances need very small doses, so if these are your objectives , do not take a melatonin 5mg supplement:
- reducing anxiety before surgery in adults; and,
- reducing nicotine withdrawal symptoms.
Moreover, pregnant and lactating women, as well as children below 18 years old, are encouraged to consult with a doctor before using these supplements. Also, those who experience hypnotic occurrences with a melatonin 5mg dose should use a smaller dose (between 0.5-3mg).
As you may probably know, melatonin production is dependent on the absence of light. Upon taking your melatonin 5mg capsules, it's best that you do not expose your eyes to bright light because this could negate the effects of the supplement.
Lastly, avoid taking melatonin if you're suffering from high blood pressure, diabetes, depression or seizure disorders. If you're already taking other medicine/s, consult with your doctor before taking these supplements.
