Modern technology in the 1990s has required powerful magnets with higher magnetic strengths and higher coercivity, which immediately paved way to the production of smaller and lighter magnets. This ultimately placed neodymium magnets at the top of the most utilized rare earth magnets, which permanently replaced alnico and ferrite magnets in most of the applications today.
Rare earth magnets are mostly used for applications like computer hard drives. This is possible because of the magnetic memory caused by a material's remnance. Wind turbine generators that are powered by permanent magnets are said to have lower cost than usual. Rare earth magnets are employed in the application of mechanically powered flashlights to generate electricity in a rather different way - shaking. Other common applications include audio speakers and headphones, fishing reel brakes, cordless equipment and tools, locks for doors, and bicycle dynamos.
Neodymium magnets are also used for industrial purposes that are focused on quality control of manufactured products, overall protection of factory equipment, and preserving the purity of products. They are also helpful in powering electric motors like servomotors, synchronous motors, electrical power steering, actuators, lifting motors, compressor motors, spindle motors, and stepper motors. In the medical department, they have been very helpful in investigating anatomical functions and health conditions of the human body through images in radiology. Rare earth magnets have enabled magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), nuclear magnetic resonance imaging (NMRI), and magnetic resonance tomography (MRT) to scan the human body.
The incredible strength of neodymium magnets, along with their other properties, have opened new possibilities, continuously inspiring new applications in new areas - those where powerful magnets were never used before. Magnets of this kind were further made handy, being added to accessories like jewelry clasps. Their close to safe properties were utilized as well when they were used in children's toys, like building sets. However, they are not entirely safe around children so despite the magnet replacements in some toys, they are not all sold. They were also used in modern sporting equipment like that of the parachute, where the magnet is responsible for its closing mechanism. Magnets are now also used to secure presentation pieces such as boxes, binders, folders, and even brochures. They are also utilized well through magic. Magicians get more imaginative and are able to do more tricky presentations with the use of magnets.
Powerful magnets are able to restore another magnet's properties by remagnitizing them. Alnico bar and horseshoe magnets may lose their magnetic attributes once they are dropped or when they repel other magnets. Remagnetization can be done by stroking the neodymium magnet's north pole, from the center to the south end of the alnico magnet. The same must be done to the south pole of the alnico magnet, but this time, from the center going to the north pole using the south pole of the neodymium magnet.
A more interesting application of this kind of permanent magnet is on the Mars Exploration Rovers. Neodymium magnets are used by the NASA Jet Propulsion Lab to collect space dusts that are meant for examination.
There are many ways by which rare earth magnets are manufactured to fit certain kinds of applications. And in turn, there are many ways by which these magnets are applied to fit certain innovative techniques.
