Being in meditation is an individual journey. This will not feel quite the same to you as it will to someone else. Since it's experiential in essence there aren't any precise words in language to convey the exact experience. There are some fundamental points that might be made.
In some cases entering this state of meditation can easily raise a bit of a perception of anxiety due to the fact that you really are not controlling it. It's more a matter of setting free all attempts at manipulation or control. This contrasts our standard means of connecting to the world. People like to believe we are in charge of things, or even at the very least that we are in command regarding ourselves. To allow that control to slip away, not knowing precisely what's on the opposite side might be a little scary and sometimes it's uncomfortable enough to keep people struggling against it. Yet if you let go, things will certainly be fine. The unease is going to fairly quickly pass.
Meditation is a condition of increased and enhanced awareness and consciousness. You will likely feel even more aware and "in touch" with everything. Just what that feels like is hard to say, but when you experience it on your own you'll know it.
Certainly there will be a very intense sensation of calm; a perception that things are okay exactly as they are, at least in this instant. You may experience a feeling of unwillingness to leave this state, or a desire to continue being right there because its so tranquil. As soon as any feeling like this arises it's most likely that feelings will go along with it like, "I wish I can simply stay in this way endlessly," which is your hint that you've already begun to slip out of meditation and back within the ordinary world of thought. That's the moment you pick your mantra back up and begin again til you once again arrive at that serene point.
Several things that may arise that may sidetrack you are different bodily sensations or sensory encounters, quite often visual in nature. It's not at all surprising to have somebody say, "I spot colors as well as swirls of light," or even, "I have a feeling of warmth or energy in some part of my body," and so forth. Or perhaps maybe they feel like their body is swaying one way or another, or that they're almost gliding and weightless. They usually need to know if these are "favorable signs" as far as meditation goes. Really, they're neither good nor bad. All sorts of odd, quirkly little feelings or sensory impressions like these can easily arise and they really say nothing at all about meditation. When you're relaxed; when you're focused on matters inward and detaching significantly from things outward, you notice all kinds of things which have probably been there all along to some degree, yet which your usual, waking mind simply obscures because it's overly busy doing the regular things a mind carries out.
Therefore in the event that you experience these types of things just let them pass. Should you become drawn in to paying them much attention you may have lost your meditative concentration. You'll enjoy time following your practice to return and consider them and examine them or speculate about their causes, but your meditation time is not the time for such analysis.".
