I am sitting here on the deck of my house in Mexico in front of the Pacific Ocean and I want to talk to you today about obligation. The message is if you want success in network marketing then fulfill your obligation. Now what do I mean by that?
Well let's pretend for a moment that you are a waiter or waitress in a restaurant. The restaurant has clients and you have a pot of coffee. Now what are you going to do with that pot of coffee? Are you going to pick it up and walk around the restaurant and ask clients if they would like a refill? Are you obligated to offer that service to the clients?
Or are you standing there with the coffee shuddering that someone might reject you? They might say, "No". Are you fearful that you will be selling something and you don't like to sell? Or do you do what is expected and ask the customers if they would like more coffee? Of course you simply ask if they are interested.
If some of them say "no" are your feelings hurt? Do you just move on to the next customer?
So it is with network marketing. You have a product or service that you believe in. (If you don't believe in it then you are in the wrong business.) I hope your product or service can help people. You have an obligation to present that product or service to people some of whom will be thankful for it.
Some people might not be interested, but then some might be ecstatic. You don't know ahead of time who will and who will not be interested. But the waiter or waitress doesn't know either. That doesn't stop them from fulfilling their obligation to their clients. Like the waiter or waitress, do you have an obligation to share even though some of the clients will not partake?
Notice I said, "share". I didn't say, "get". What's the difference? Many of your sponsors or upline members have urged you to "get" customers or "get" distributors. No! Wrong! Successful network marketers do not "get" customers or distributors. We share our product, share our opportunity, expose as many people as we can. We give them the chance to see what it is and if they say "no" we are not offended, we do not take it personal, our ego is not bruised. We simply thank them for their time and move on, asking them if it is OK to stay in touch. Why? Because often "no" means "not now". Things change and the person who says no today might say yes next year.
We don't try to "get" anyone and we don't try to sell them anything. Remember my prior article about "go for no"? Done this way, you will not experience rejection and you will find success. So if you want to be a success in network marketing, fulfill your obligation.
