The process of creating a continuous motion and shape change illusion through rapid display of a sequence of static images that is slightly different from one another is called animation. Animation can be recorded on either analogue or digital media, depending on the format and requirement of the animation created. There are several animation courses one can learn and animation training one can go through.
The first of the animation courses is called Traditional animation. This is the traditional way of doing animation through the use of handmade drawings. This animation requires the reproduction of the same image with slight difference, but is progressive in nature to depict certain actions.
How is cel animation done? A layout or a plan is created for the drawing you want to animate. Trace the image in a transparent sheet. This transparent sheet is known as a cel thus the name Cel animation. The cel is used as a medium for drawing frames. Draw the outline for the images and color the said drawing on the back of the cel. The cel is considered an effective technique that helps save time through combining characters and backgrounds. In traditional or cel animation each frame is drawn by hand and each cel is mixed and matched with other cels. Lately cel animations are accompanied by music, sound effects and association of timing for every single effect. A total of 10 to 12 frames are played in rapid succession per second to give a representation of movement in a cel animation.
The second of the animation courses is called Stop animation. Compared to cel animation, stop animation is a technique to make objects move on its own. This method required physically moving real objects and taking a shot of such object one frame of film at a time. This method of shooting images is made to create the illusion that the object is moving. Stop-motion animation is classified into different types, the names of which are mostly based on the medium used to create said animation. For example, in a Puppet animation puppet figures are used and made to appear like interacting in an environment created for the scene. Typically an armature is created and this is where the puppet is built. Plasticine animation on the other hand uses characters made of clay or any other malleable material to create an animated scene. Cut out animation uses two dimensional pieces of materials such as paper, cloth or the likes. Silhouette animation, a form of cut out animation, films the shadow created by opening a light behind the image. It is not the image that matters but its shadow. Model animation, another form of cut out animation, incorporates characters with actual, live actors in a real setting. Object animation, on the other hand uses unusual or inanimate objects and makes them alive through stop-motion animation. And lastly another form of stop motion animation is called Pixilation. In Pixilation live humans are used as the main characters in a stop-motion animation.
The third of the animation courses is called computer animation. This method uses a variety of techniques created digitally through a personal computer. 2D animation focuses on manipulating images. On the other hand three-dimensional animation builds virtual worlds wherein objects move as well as interact with one another.
Both 2D and 3D animation courses require knowledge and training in the use of software and programs. 2D animation training includes using programs such as PowerPoint and Flash while 3D animation training uses programs such as 3Ds Max, Maya or Revit.
