3Ds Max was formerly known as 3D Studio Max. This program is a professional 3D graphics program for making 3d Animations, models, games and images. This program was developed and introduced by Autodesk Media and Entertainment. This was initially developed for DOS platform, but after releasing four versions of it, a Windows NT platform ready version was released and was named 3D Studio Max. It was then named 3Ds Max (upper and lower case) after its 7th version was released.
Evolution of 3Ds Max
The older version of this software, 3D Studio Max, with code name Jaguar, was officially announced at Siggraph in 1995 and was made public April 1996.
After the success of the 1st Windows NT capable version, 3D Studio Max R2, with codename Athena was announced in August of 1997 and released September of the same year. R2 was different from the first version because of several add-ons such as Ray-tracing in the Scanline renderer and Maps developed by Steven Blackmon and Scott Kirvann.
3D Studio Max R3 with codename Shiva, was announced at the Game Developer's conference April of 1999 and was released by June of the same year. It was the last version that was published with the Kinetix Logo. It's User interface was redesigned to support larger true-color icons on personalized tabbed toolbars that the user can create and edit.
The fourth in the evolution of this software was Discreet 3Dsmax 4 with codename Magma, initially introduced at Siggraph 2000 in New Orleans. It contains a new IK system as well as Quad Menus, Active shade render preview mode and a redesigned Modifier stack that supports Drag and Drop actions.
Discreet 3Dsmax 5 with codename Luna was the first ever program released to support the plug in format of the previous versions. Discreet 3Dsmax 6 and Discreet 3Dsmax 7 followed suit and gave additional features to this already full packed software. The latest version Discreet 3Dsmax 8 is more commonly known as 3Ds Max.
Learning 3Ds Max
Just like any 3D animation software program, learning 3Ds Max requires familiarization of several features that this program possess. Let us go ahead and go through some of them below.
MAXScript - this is a pre installed scripting language used to automatically make repetitive tasks or designs. It is also used to combine pre-existing functions in alternative ways as well as develop new user interface, tools and others. Through MAXScript, plug-in modules can be created easily.
Character Studio - this was a plug-in that was present since the creation of Max version 4. This program helps animate virtual characters.
Scene Explorer - this tool provides hierarchical view of scene data, making more complex scenes easier to manipulate.
DWG import - this software supports importing and linking of drawing files.
Texture Assignment and Editing - this program included creative texture and planar mapping like tiling, decals, angle, blur, UV stretching, mirroring and relaxation.
General Key Framing - this lets user create animation with ease
Constrained animation - this is a special type of controller that helps automate the animation process.
Skinning - this or the Physique modifier may be used to achieve precise control of skeletal deformation, so that characters can deform smoothly as joints move.
- Skeletons and Inverse Kinematics
- Integrated Cloth Solver
- Integration with Autodesk Vault
The introduction of this program was the reason behind high tech movies like Avatar and 2012, wherein computer generated graphics where animated alongside live-action acting. Indeed, having such a program made life better and more vivid.
