Silicone kitchen accessories like oven mitts, potholders, trivets and coasters are new for some people simply because they are accustomed to seeing rubber, metal and wood materials. Silicone is indeed a more modern choice because it enables a single kitchen accessory to perform various duties, allowing you to save on money and space.
For instance, Rhumen Quality Silicone Coaster Placemat is practically shaped so it can be easily used as oven mitts, trivets, potholders, hot pad, placemat and coaster. You can even use it as an additional accent under a vase or figurine. Even bakeware now also use 100|silicone as primary material for practical reasons. Why is silicone now the preferred material for kitchen accessories, cookware and bakeware?
Silicone is the byproduct of silicon obtained from the molecules of sand and rock, and oxygen with traces of carbon and hydrogen. This is the pure silicone recognized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as food-grade, a material that can be used for cookware, bakeware and kitchen accessories like oven mitts.
For more than five decades, silicone has been a common material for industrial, electronic and aeronautic projects. It is used to insulate some buildings and confine radioactivity. Silicone resistors are also very common in gadgets and appliances. Even in space stations, silicone is used to protect astronauts from cosmic heat. This material has certainly come a long way from high above down to the comforts of many kitchens.
Contrary to popular belief, silicone is not poisonous as it surpasses both food and environmental standards. It can be used at home, even on kitchenware that you use for cooking your foods. Even when they are no longer usable, they can still be recycled, albeit not being biodegradable.
Nonetheless, there are real health concerns that every consumer should know when using silicone kitchen accessories. Although only 100|silicone is approved by the FDA for kitchen use, there are still a lot of low-grade brands that sell potentially hazardous versions, especially when broken or heated above the temperature limitation.
To save on manufacturing cost, some makers of silicone oven mitts, potholders, trivets and other kitchen accessories add chemical fillers to the base material. The physical appearance flexibility, softness and durability are practically all the same, but the difference is in the resistance to heat and potential harm when ingested.
While food-grade silicone can withstand up to 448 degrees Fahrenheit of temperature, just enough to stay safe and durable even when placed inside the oven (which is the case for silicone cookware and bakeware), silicone with filler can only withstand from 130 to 260 degrees Fahrenheit, depending on the amount of filler added. If you accidentally used a low-grade silicone cookware on a preheated oven at 400 degrees Fahrenheit, the toxic chemicals will leak to your food that can cause poisoning. To certain extent, the silicone cookware might even break and melt, which is the same for silicone oven mitts.
For this reason, always check the label of silicone kitchen accessories before buying, so you won t accidentally buy low-grade silicone kitchen accessories, cookware and kitchenware. If you already own some, double check the label and stick with the temperature requirement.
