Ten years ago, most people wanting to earn a living were still stuck with a grueling commute to an office environment, where they would spend their weekdays in front of a computer. But today's faster internet speeds and advanced technology have seen many more employees working and taking the plunge from their home offices.
Whether it's a company who allows their employees to telecommute for a set number of hours per week, or a former 8-to-5er who is starting their own home-based business, working from home is revealing many benefits for both telecommuters and employers.
The Statistics
Since 2005, telecommuting and tele-working have grown approximately 80%. It was estimated by Forrester Research in 2010 that almost three million employees were telecommuting for most of their work week. And by 2016, Forrester Research estimates that the number of those who work from home at least part-time will reach an impressive 63 million, or 43% of the workforce (1).
Across the world, it's estimated that twenty-four percent of companies have completely adopted the work-at-home lifestyle, where their employees spend time working both from the office and from home.
Launching a Business
Working from home can also occur when an individual decides to leave the workforce and start their own business. Nearly half of those workers who work from home are self-employed.
The Benefits of Working from Home
Today's work-from-home reality is that it is helping millions of employees and employers to reduce their costs, which is definitely a priority in today's economy. Companies needing to downsize no longer have to lay off or fire their employees; instead, they can allow their employees to work from home. Doing this saves the employee gas and wear and tear on their vehicle, and saves the employer on the costs of having on location employees.
The employee also enjoys less stress when they are home-based. Less stress means fewer sick days as well as increased productivity. Working online from home also opens up several opportunities for supplemental employment without having to leave the place of residence.
Avoiding Home-based Scams
These days, online jobs from home are plentiful. Sadly, so are the potential scams. And the less experienced a would-be home worker is, the greater the chance they can become a victim. However, being aware of the types of scams that are out there can go a long way to avoiding them.
One-Time Payment Scams
This type of scam is also known as 'bait and switch'. A company attracts their victims with the promise of being able to make a fortune from home. In order to do that, an individual must first send the company a one-time fee in order to get the start-up package. Many things can go wrong in this scenario. The individual either never receives the package, or the information it contains is absolutely worthless.
Reshipping Scams
This scam involves an ad which promises citizens of the United States can earn money from home by becoming item 're-shippers'. Items are delivered to their home, and payment is received when those items have been re-shipped. This mean the individual could be charged by the authorities for the shipment of illegal or stolen goods.
The good news is that there are hundreds of legitimate work-from-home companies that want to hire home-based workers.
How To Find Real Home-Based Jobs
1. Any legitimate company that advertises a need for employees should be able to provide all of the details of the position upon request. Those companies who try and rush a decision about signing up to work for them are very likely running some type of scam.
2. Research the company. Do they have a website? Can you contact them? You should probably avoid this company if they don't have a website and/or they don't have a way for you to easily contact them.
3. Consider using a service such as FlexWorkFinder.com that helps you navigate through the freedom career landscape to quickly and easily find real, legitimate jobs.
