GM recalls more vehicles

Are you tuning out the news reports that talk about GM and its car recalls? If you are that is a big mistake!

The author over at Straight Talk Automotive just put up another article that not only talks about GM's latest announced recall, but he tells us how this is going to play out. He does this by showing us the inside of how recalls are handled at the carmaker dealerships.

The latest announced recall puts the total number of recalls by GM at 29 so far this year. Those 29 recalls cover 15.4 million cars. That is more cars than GM manufactures world wide in one year.

If you remember back to when GM was bailed out, they shuttered several car brands such as Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Hummer, and Saturn. While they were shuttering these car brands they also closed quite a few of the car dealerships, not only the ones of the shuttered brands, but some of the brands they still have.

This closing of dealerships supposedly was done to promote a strong and profitable dealer network, but it also reduced the total number of available service points for their cars.

This has caused a problem in that General Motors does not have enough dealerships and mechanics to perform all these recalls in a timely manner. Even if General Motors could magically produce all the required parts in an instant, it may be 2 or more years before these cars get repaired.

That means that these General Motors cars are on the highways with us, and they could cease to function thus causing a traffic accident that not only injures or kills the owner and occupants of the General Motors cars, but those of us that don't drive their cars as well.

These 15.4 million cars with safety recalls is definitely bad, but the other part of this is we don't know how many more of these safety recalls they are going to have for the rest of the year.

With this large number of car safety recalls, it would be great if GM could offer loaner cars to their customers and take these safety recalled cars off the roads until they are repaired. But, that is not possible for General Motors to offer those customers loaner cars while theirs wait to be fixed as GM does not have enough cars to do that.

These customers of theirs, just like the rest of us need to go to work, pick up the kids, go shopping, and all the other routine everyday tasks we do. So for now those safety recalled General Motors cars will be sharing the roads with us and we need to understand these risks and protect ourselves.
