Usually most dietitians and personal fitness trainers ask us to avoid bananas in order to help us lose weight and call them a no-benefit fruit. Now, one may ask, what's wrong with bananas? Or the question may crop up, how many calories in a banana?
Aren't they a source of potassium?
Why do bananas get a bad reputation? Usually this misconception arises because some people think that bananas are much higher in sugar or carbohydrates, than other fruits. But truth be told, a medium banana has 105 calories and 27 grams of carbohydrate, which is not much more than many other types of fruit such as medium pears, apples, a cup of pineapple or a cup of blueberries.
Another reason why people avoid bananas may be because they are believed to have high glycemic index (GI), causing blood sugar and insulin levels to rise quickly after eating one. But this is not true. Bananas actually have a low GI with a value of 51. The fact is that foods with a low GI cause one's blood sugar levels to rise gradually, after eating them, and values less than 55 are considered low.
Bananas are a source of nutritional benefits, especially containing high potassium content. A medium banana contains about 422 milligrams of potassium, which is considerably more than a medium-sized apple, orange or pear.
In fact, bananas are the richest source of potassium among all other types of fruit such as cantaloupe and honeydew melon which have potassium counts of 440 and 426 mg per cup, respectively.
Most of us do not get enough potassium in our diet because we do not eat enough fruits and vegetables. Potassium also helps to regulate the body's water balance and also helps to protect against high blood pressure by increasing the amount of sodium excreted by your kidneys.
Potassium is also important for normal muscle growth and repair, nerve and brain functions. While adults and teenagers require about 4,700 mg of potassium each day; children between one and three years require 3,000 mg, daily.
Bananas are also a good source of carbohydrates, which help provide energy for a workout. If you eat a banana an hour before you exercise, it provides glucose into your bloodstream which in turn provides energy for a workout.
Apart from the above benefits, bananas are also a great post-workout food. Their natural sugars are used to rebuild and repair muscle, provide energy after strenuous workouts and also convert sugar into glycogen, through their potassium content. Besides, bananas are also a source of fiber as well as a good source of vitamin B6.
The bottom line is that all fruit is good for you, including bananas. Hence it is important to include different types of fruit in our diet so that we can get a wider variety of vitamins and minerals, which help us to keep fit. So, the next time you are offered a banana for breakfast or as a snack, do not say no to it!
