Photography, once a hobby exclusive only to the ones who can afford the required expensive equipment and education to partake in it, is now a lucrative artistic endeavor pursued by many. A lot of photography tutorials have popped up on the internet, providing easy access to information shared by various photography enthusiasts. These photography tutorials differ in approach and scale, ranging from simple visualizations to advanced, eye popping tricks that can turn everyday mundane sceneries to works of pure imagination.
Most of these photography tutorials require none of the then-expensive hardware necessary to create dazzling visual presentations. The advent of affordable smartphones and other handheld, cost-effective image capture devices has now given the would-be digital photographer multiple avenues and opportunities to nurture their growing skill. The photography tutorials readily available on the internet are most often than not free, products of an online domino effect that has led talented digital photographers who have learned from other photography tutorials to share what they now know to the budding digital photography enthusiast.
So what is digital photography? In essence, digital photography is an evolution of normal photography influenced by technology and consumer demand. Back in the day, cameras were reliant on film-based capture and exposure techniques to develop print photographs. Although not severely limited, the photography tricks one could perform using conventional photography had a high learning curve and a considerable amount of preparation in terms of set visualization and arrangement; that, as well as requiring numerous types of equipment and add-ons such as diffusers, flash bulbs, filters and so on that were just too costly and cumbersome to be of any use. Developing captured images was also significantly troublesome for the would-be photographer, requiring the use of either a dark room (a red-lit room that housed various photography development chemicals to bring out captured images on paper with the use of developing agents) or the services of a photograph development store that handled photograph development for a price.
As technologies involving microprocessors began to evolve at an exponential rate, so too did the camera. Demand was rising for a cheaper alternative to the fast growing image capture market, which ultimately led fabrication companies to seek for ways to corner this market, and to design a digital medium that did away with standard film and took advantage of existing digital technology. This chain reaction of sorts gave birth to the digital camera, a hybrid image capture device that enabled common photographers to capture images and preview them using a computer and any image viewing software able to interface with their equipment.
As the digital camera evolved, it began to introduce new functions and features that did away with a number of traditional techniques: traditional image filters requiring various lens attachments were replaced with one-touch digital filters, magnification optics attachments are now built-in and come in all types of magnification ranges, and the intensive use of diffusers to balance lighting and shadow are now optional, given the digital camera's ability to digitally control and enhance lighting using built-in image processing software.
But the most important game-changer that literally drove the success of the digital camera was not in the reduction of required additional equipment. Since everything is stored inside the device in a digital data format, the digital camera has completely done away with the need for film, drastically dropping the costs of photography capture. Also, since everything is done digitally, digital photographers can now instantly preview their captured images and get instant feedback, causing a spike in the way image capture is now learned. Supporting software, such as Adobe Photoshop, has also allowed digital photographers to further enhance their captured artistic works, creating a massive market of amazing digitally enhanced and/or manipulated imagery that has dazzled the minds of many photography enthusiasts and viewers alike.
Modern digital cameras come in all shapes and sizes. Many photography tutorials present neutral, non-equipment specific techniques that allow the would-be photography enthusiast to create amazing photographs without having to rely on industry-standard or expensive digital cameras. Nowadays, a lot of incredible images are captured using devices as simple as a standard smartphone with a low-resolution capture quality.
The photography tutorials found online, though informative, assume that one is already familiar with the types of cameras used for professional photography in general. They also contain jargon related to digital photography. Below are the descriptions of the two kinds of professional cameras used in various online photography tutorials, presented for your convenience; the goal is to dive right in and become familiar with techniques while minimizing having to learn these particular phrases and words, so understanding the difference between both devices is paramount in smoothly learning their various capabilities and limitations. There are more descriptions of these cameras that will appear in the tutorials you will find online, most of which are not covered by this quick rundown. The definitions of these words are readily available in various information repositories such as Wikipedia, so it wouldn't hurt to do a bit of further research.
SLR camera – SLR cameras, or single-lens reflex cameras, is a type of image capture device that allows the photographer to capture the same image they see through the device's lens. This allows the photographer to instantly predict the outcome of the shot, minimizing multiple safety shots and the risk of reshoots. The SLR camera is the product at the end of the traditional photography revolution and has given birth to a number of talented photographers looking for a professional method of capturing images as opposed to standard point-and-shoot equipment. SLR cameras are generally expensive, given their high cost of fabrication and specialized forms of configuration, but are variable in terms of use and accessory compatibility, such as monopods, tripods and lens attachments. There are many photographers, both amateur and professional, who still prefer to use SLR cameras due to their somewhat limiting function compared to modern digital cameras.
Although not conventional, there is no shame in using an SLR camera. Photographers who capture amazing images using SLR cameras are highly lauded in the photography field, and more often than not discover new ways on how to capture images; these techniques are then used to develop their digital counterparts and made more convenient to utilize.
DSLR camera – Digital single lens reflex cameras are the evolution of SLR cameras: a product of technological advancements in the field of image processing technology. The DSLR is the new kid on the block, allowing amateur photographers to compete on somewhat equal grounds against professional photographers who still practice traditional methods of photography. They give photographers easy access to a wide range of techniques that would have otherwise required external equipment, such as lens and aperture types, as well as lighting balancing and adjusting gear. They are powerful photography devices that can play variable roles. Being digital devices, they are capable of capturing images while immediately showing the user the end result via a liquid crystal display attached to the body of the device, as opposed to traditional photography methods that require the photographer to develop the shot first before seeing the end result. Most DSLRs nowadays can even go as far as editing the image straight from the device. Red eye correction and color balancing can be done via the digital camera's functions, and are now as easy as pushing a few buttons to acquire that desired effect.
