Network Marketing and Direct Selling - these two have been around for some time. They have been familiar to almost everyone through the goods in the lines of cosmetics, food storage and containment, kitchen collections, house cleaning and home appliances. Today, the wide array of goods and services offered through Network Marketing and Direct Selling have become even more varied, which already include but still not limited to, clothing, shoes, bags, accessories, toys, baby needs, bed and bath, insurance and other pre-need policies, and even medicine and food supplements. Network Marketing and Direct Selling, however, are misunderstood as often as people come across with them and are interchanged in a very unlikely manner.

Direct Selling vs Customary Selling

Direct Selling is the act of marketing and selling goods and services to buyers in a direct manner. It is different from customary selling mainly in view of two particular aspects - location and marketing.

For the first aspect, customary selling is identified by its specific site. The seller has a particular store, stall, corner in a mall or a visible spot in the street. The buyer then becomes familiar with the seller and his products and services because of the location in the city. Because of this, choosing the specific place of business has become very vital for the seller. The more visible and accessible to buyers his place is, the higher the chance that he will get more customers, increasing the possibilities of sales.

Direct Selling, on the other hand, is very different. The seller in this type of selling goes from place to place, marketing the goods and services, and eventually, making a sale. Before, the seller brings with him the products he sells. Today, however, he may choose to bring catalog alone, containing pictures, specific descriptions and prices of the items for the prospective buyer to decide on. Sellers of higher-end even bring their gadgets for presentations of their products and services. More so, the more skilled ones bring samples for demonstrations of proper use and for the potential buyer's scrutiny. Through the seller's catalog, presentation, sample or demonstration, the buyer may then place orders which then lead to the delivery of the marketed products or services.

The second aspect is marketing. While customary selling is marketed through the conventional methods such as print and commercials, direct selling is marketed through word of mouth. Also, this is where Network Marketing comes in.

Network Marketing in Direct Selling

Aside from word of mouth, direct selling companies came up with Network Marketing. It is a tactic which rewards distributors not just for the sales they make, but also for each sale that their downlines generate.

Network Marketing as a marketing strategy works in this way: People get familiar with the company and its products through the distributor. The people the distributor interacts already become possible buyers. And if they are interested in making extra money, they themselves can become sellers of the products. And from each sale they make, the pioneer seller will also have profit. Simply stated, this form of marketing strategy creates new set of sellers as it creates new set of buyers.
