CA PE Exam Structure

The CA PE Exam is eight hours long, four hours in the morning and 4 hours in the afternoon. The morning examination is common to all examinees, known as the Breadth Exam. The Breadth Section covers the 5 principal parts of the Civil PE Exam: Transportation, Structural, Water Resources, Geotechncial, and Construction.

In the afternoon, 1 of 3 Depth Exams is chosen. This preference is made before the examination, a process outlined by each state board in combination with the NCEES.

The CA PE Exam is composed of 5 segments:
I. Standards of Practice (6%) - laws regulating engineering surveying and the standards of care required.
II. Equipment and Uses (8%) - types of equipment used and their application for gathering and interpreting field data and for construction layout.
III. Field Measurements (28%) - methods and procedures for determining distances, angles and elevations"
IV. Calculations (33%) - analytical methods for applying the mathematical relationships between measured distances, angles and elevations"
V. Data Application Procedures (25%) - research and planning for field surveys and the conversion of field data to an engineering format
