Rafting the Rivers of Chile
Home to some of the world's most sought-after rafting rivers, Chile provides plenty of adrenaline for thrill seekers. Rivers surrounded by the majestic beauty of the Andes Mountains provide a serene backdrop for anyone embarking on this whitewater adventure.
Although the waters are swift and cold, there are difficulty levels ranging from beginner to expert. Some rivers, like the Trancura, offer the opportunity to start off slow and progressively become more and more difficult to navigate, so groups of all experience levels can come together and choose their rafting trip according to their abilities.

Chile has a healthy influx of tourists, so guided rafting trips are abundant and available year-round. It is best to always check with the tour company for availability and schedule. Some of Chile's most popular and well-guided whitewater rivers are:
- Cajon del Maipo: Located near Santiago, this makes for an excellent day trip. The river provides somewhat tamer (but not weak!) rapids. http://maiporafting.com/
- Petrohué River: Has Class III and IV rapids, suitable for people who want to experience rapids that are just beyond beginner level. http://www.secretpatagonia.com/rafting-petrohue-river/
- Trancura: The Lower Part of the river allows for beginners and intermediate level rafters, but the Higher Part is really for experts only. The water is rough and dangerous to anyone that is not experienced. You can choose which part of the river to explore. http://www.politur.com/agencia/ http://www.solynievepucon.com/
- Futaleufu River: This is one of the world's most premier whitewater rivers. Only those with lots of experience should attempt to conquer this river. http://www.rowadventures.com/futaleufu-chile-adventure
- Bio Bio: This beautiful river starts off tame with Class II and III waters, but don't be fooled. You will be experiencing much rougher waters if you can make it all the way through! Take in the scenery as you navigate Class V rapids. http://www.lostworldadventures.com/activities/rafting/chilerafting.htm
Some rafting itineraries are available as multi-sport trips. This can include hiking, kayaking, horseback riding, mountain biking, fishing, and yoga. Many packages are very well-organized and include something for all tastes. The beautiful thing about Chile's Patagonia is that the environment provides ample opportunities for adventure and serenity. It is a contrasting landscape with serene fields adjacent to rumbling waterways. Quiet trees line the pathways up to towering volcanoes, and snow is settled softly against some of the tallest mountains in the Western Hemisphere.
Rafting in Chile is not just about the adrenaline, it's also about taking in the breathtaking sights, spending time with locals, eating fantastic food, and drinking Chile's finest wines. The rivers in Patagonia are surrounded by natural formations that give it its distinct character. Be prepared to see snowcapped Andes Mountains, glaciers, vast lakes, and lush green blankets of grassy vegetation. For a special treat, journey to the South of Chile to raft amongst Chile's most notorious volcanoes and lakes.
If you are set on rafting in Chile's chilly rivers, make sure to bring the necessary equipment. Check with your tour guide before you go, they may have some of the equipment included in the price, or available for rent on site. In the colder months of early spring, late fall, and winter it is advisable to wear long sleeve tops and tight elastic pants to wear underneath a wetsuit. During summer months, a bathing suit is advised – always along with a wetsuit! Most of the rivers in Chile are fed by glacier water, so it gets very cold. Also bring plenty of sunblock. Just because the water is cold doesn't mean the sun won't be out. For your feet, the ideal option is a pair of wetsuit booties. But sneakers or closed toe sandals with heel straps will work as well. Beware that some items like hats and sunglasses can fly away, so make sure they have straps if you wish to wear them. Cameras are not recommended, as you need to pay attention so as not to fall out of the raft.
It is also possible to lose your camera in the water. But fear not, most tour operations have professional photographers that capture every moment and you can purchase the video and still shots after your excursion. Typically, the only requirements needed for beginner level rapids are an ability to swim, as well as good general health, as the maneuvers and exercise can require a bit of stamina.
Now that you can't wait to get into the freezing Chilean waters, start booking your trip! As far as accommodations go, check out the links above – the rafting guides usually offer multi-day excursions that include overnight camping or lodging in luxurious hotels. Chile is a well-connected country with multiple international airports servicing major carriers like LAN Airlines (www.lan.com).
