Car safety is something that many of us have taken for granted, since we have never known of a situation where this was not the way it works.
There was a time when there was no National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that was a watchdog of car safety problems. This was before Ralph Nader was able to successfully challenge General Motors on the safety of their cars back in the 1960s.
Lately though the effectiveness of the NHTSA has been exposed to show that it doesn't really do its job well. This exposure of course is related to the ongoing General Motors safety problems and the fact that they went on for over 10 years. It is a shame that it took the deaths of 13 people to bring this travesty to light.
In the latest article by the author over at Straight Talk Automotive, he points out that GM is not the only company that has safety problems with their cars and these problems are not confined to mechanical problems, but are also in the software programming of the car manufacturers.
NHTSA is not the only agency that is not doing its job well, there is also the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) which oversees statements made by public companies and is supposed to make sure they disclose everything, and protect the public's investments in them. Then there is the state governments highway maintainence departments that are supposed to keep our highways safe and clear of debris.
The state highway departments have got to do a better job, as the car manufacturers are required to build cars that get beter and better mileage, they are reducing the road clearance height of their cars to take advantage of better aerodynamics.
If you recall the new American electric car, Tesla Model S, has had some fires which was caused by road debris penetrating their batteries. This is not Tesla's fault, but that of state government highway departments. To overcome this Tesla had to raise the height of their cars and install more battery protections.
The next time you see an accident, pay close attention to the fact that the police no longer require the tow drivers to sweep up or remove the wreck debris. This use to be a requirement, but it is no longer required. They leave it and allow motorists to drive through it, sometimes puncturing their tires or carrying it further down the road. Drive by that location a couple days later and you will see the debris has been scattered all over the road as well as further down from it. This of course is not safe for anyone.
We all need to be more vigilant about not only the safety problems that are reported for the cars we drive, but those of other motorists and even the roads we drive on. Nothing can be considered safe anymore.
As the author points out, you need to keep track of any software updates to your cars computers as this can be an area that can cause driving problems or even a wreck, which is not your fault. He even points out that that this has already happened and offers you a way to keep records so that if you have aproblem or accident, you can check to see if your car has had its software updated without you knowing.
