What do you truly know about natural disasters? Would you know how to survive after a global catastrophe? What should you do when a disaster hits?
There are a great number of people who die from cataclysms natural events more than what we hear or read about on the news. No one can truly predict with precision when a natural disaster will hit, so to ensure maximum survival you have to be prepared. Nature is not one to mess with.
Disasters are a way of life. They don't happen more often because of prophecies from past ancient civilizations or end of world propaganda. They happen just as much today as they happened 50 years ago. For the last 5 years there has been about the same amount of disasters as we seen throughout the last hundred years.
Survival during a natural disaster is a very difficult task. Yet, if you know what you are facing, the task of survival becomes a little easier. If you learn a few important tips, you can survive a tornado, hurricane or any other natural disaster.
For example, one of the most deadly natural phenomenons is tornado. Tornadoes occur in all corners of our world, but in the USA they occurs the most. Tornadoes occur often in the States of South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, North East Texas and Colorado. Each year hundreds of people are killed and 1500 or more are injured annually from tornadoes.
If you can hide underground, your chances of survival increase dramatically. All high risk tornado areas, such as schools, businesses and other buildings have special protected areas for people to take shelter. Most homes have underground cellars or other areas that serve as storm shelters.
In extreme case, where no storm shelter are nearby, a person can hide in a basement. In this situation, do not approach the windows and cover yourself with anything that can protect you from flying glass or other objects.
If in a house there is a cellar, stay on the lower floor of the building in the smallest room away from windows and exterior walls. For such purposes bathroom or toilet are quite suitable. The bathroom is always your best choice if no other protection is available. Lay on the floor with face down, cover your head with your hands. Make barricades of mattresses and pillows and hide under them.
If during a tornado you are driving, it is better to get out and find shelter. You will hardly be able to outrun a tornado, the speed of which can sometimes be more than 318 miles per hour or 143 meter per second. There is now scientific data to support tornadoes beyond the F5 rating of 318 mph. There is now a higher category of tornado called a F6 with sustained winds of 379 mph or 172 meters per second. Your only recourse is to find a bridge and get as far underneath it as possible.
The noise of the wind will be deafening, dirt and small objects will be flying by. Cover your ears and put protect your head by placing it as close to your legs as possible. You can also turn your face into the wall of the bridge for protection.
The pressure difference between the time you take shelter and when the tornado hits will be extremely difficult to withstand. Your ears may bleed, your noise may bleed because of the extreme drop in pressure. Stay where you are at and do not try to escape the safety of the bridge. Tornadoes are fast movers and before you know it, it will have passed.
With circular winds and that kind of speed, there is no surviving it unless you are underground. Most F4 - F6 tornadoes do not appear without warning. There is ample warning to find shelter. You first survival skill is to know where the closest storm shelters are located in the city. Your second survival skill is to learn first aid.
Stay close to your family, coworkers or friends and stay calm. If you have known about an approaching tornado, you should already have an emergency tornado pack ready to go with all the necessary items for survival. Take flashlights, batteries, portable radio, spare clothes, first aid kit, food, and water. Head to your storm shelter or the nears town shelter.
In the rare event you are caught in a tornado, you will have no control of where you will land or what kind of debris is within the vortex. Large objects such as vehicles, houses and animals can be flying around with you. An object hitting you at that speed will cause instant death. It will be hard to breathe and hard to see. The best you can do is close your eyes and make yourself into a ball. There are success stories of people getting caught in a tornado and successfully landing somewhere and surviving. So it is possible.
There is a possibility you will land in a soft area and come out with slight injuries. Above all you want to ensure you protect your head and also you're mid-section. There is a greater chance of surviving if something hits you from behind then an object hitting you in the gut area. Internal bleeding is more common with a blow to the mid-section.
Nobody can ever have time to prepare for the end of the world. But you can make yourself as prepared as possible. That small bit of prepping can be the difference between life and death.
