What do you think about travelling? As for me, I like travel. For many, the idea of traveling to foreign places is not something that brings comfort and enjoyment. Often for first time travelers, it can cause a lot of stress and worry.
If you are a beginner in traveling, then it is always best to start out in your own backyard. Instead of biking across Europe, try biking through the Grand Teton national park or even the Grand Canyon. This will give you a little more confidence that you can handle situations as they come up.
Now, not everyone wants to camp, bike or do those things that are considered more of getting to know nature. Some like to travel and see historical sites or famous parts of the world. In this regard, I still recommend starting in your own backyard. Perhaps try traveling to historical places within your own country. For example, in the U.S there are places such as Washington and surrounding areas that can provide a ton of interesting things to see.
So why start out in your own backyard
There are a few reasons to do this. Not everyone is eager to take on a language barrier or put themselves in areas that are considered dangerous. By starting out locally, a person gets use to traveling, so they focus on other parts of the trip.
Here are few things to consider when abroad and how to handle them.
- Always know where your embassy is located and have a way to contact them.
- Buy a trustworthy and comfortable pouch that you can wear around your neck to keep your important papers like passport and visas.
- Create a copy of your passport and leave that at home with a trusted family member or friend. In the event you lose your passport or it gets stolen, this copy can be faxed or emailed to you and will come in very handy as a temporary while the embassy gets you a new one.
- Always take a credit card with you and let your credit card company know you are traveling and to where. Let them know when you will be coming back. A record of your travels and where you have used the card is a good way to track your whereabouts in the event something happens.
- It is recommended a person learn a few key words when in a country that does not speak English or your native tongue. You should know how to ask for a restroom, food, drink and lodging. A taxi driver will not know what you are taking about if you can say the name of your hotel or location of where you are staying.
- Only trust tax drivers that are close to the center of the city or work with the hotel where you are staying.
- It is always less expensive to rent an apartment then to stay in a hotel. Plus you will be able to integrate more closely with the local people when you shop for groceries or other necessities.
- Make sure you visit your doctor before going abroad to ensure there are no vaccinations needed to enter a country. You will also want to ensure you are protecting yourself from any outbreaks in the country you are heading too.
For most, the worry of traveling outside the country will disappear when you realize people are mainly nice and helpful. Most of what you see on the news is not really happening everywhere in a country. Most of the news focuses on just parts of a country and not the whole thing.
For Example:
In any country, civilized or not, people who live there, are very polite, they are rather hospitable to foreigners. They will help to find your way around, tell the places not to miss, and always will be genuinely interested in your adventures and travels.
It would not be very hard to find someone to spend the day with you as a guide for a small sum of money. I normally will always search for a guide online who will meet me at the airport, show me where my hotel or apartment is and meet me each day to show me the sites. It is a much more enjoyable way to travel and often times safer.
How to Travel
So we talked about first starting out your travel experiences in your own backyard. Second we talked about getting really close and friendly with the local experience by hiring a guide to show you around and keep you safe. Thirdly and my least favorite way to travel is the old and reliable travel agency.
If you plan to take a cruise or travel to many places that are not very close to each other, then a travel agency makes sense. Yet if you are going to on country and staying there, you will miss out on experiencing the true culture and experiences you can only find with a private guide.
A travel agency will cost you a lot more money and most of the time you are tied to the travel group, who will dictate when and what you see. I tried this method a few times and was not impressed with what I learned, experienced or interacted with. I felt kind of robbed.
A journey is an adventure, new people, emotions and unforgettable impressions, which will last a lifetime. These experiences gain a special place within your soul that no other experience can replace.
