From Twistz Bandz to Rainbow Loom

Rainbow Loom, the latest trend for children, became a really popular toy. It is a plastic pegboard that is being used to make rubber bands of different colors into bracelets and charms. It was invented by a Malaysian immigrant last 2011. His name is Cheong Choon Ng. He is 45 years old and married. He has a 15 year-old daughter, named Teresa, and a 12 year-old daughter, named Michelle.

Ng is a Malaysian immigrant and a graduate of Mechanical Engineering. Before Ng was able to name the device "Rainbow Loom", he first named it "Twistz Bandz". Twistz Bandz has push pin-type pegs that are looped with colored rubber bands. After being looped, a result known as Brunnian Links can be seen. It can be assembled on the loom to make bracelets and other shapes. Its parts include a pegboard, hook, special C-shaped fasteners (also known as c-clips) and 600 or more mini rubber bands in different colors.

Even as little children, Ng's daughters wanted to have their own jewellery. He saw how they put together rubber bands to make different kinds of bracelets. Ng became inspired to make a toy loom for his daughters to help them make their own rubber-band jewellery. He then came up with an invention and named the prototype "Twistz Bandz".

Cheong Choon Ng was motivated by his family to market his product. He invested $10, 000 and found a factory in China to manufacture the parts. Ng found out that there was a product named Twist Band, which is almost the same as the name of his invention "Twistz Bandz", in the market therefore he decided to rename his invention. His brother and niece thought of a new name for the product and that is "Rainbow Loom".

Many customers failed to understand how to use his loom. This incident made him unsuccessful in selling his product and made his efforts meaningless. Ng decided to sells his Rainbow on the online market. He made instructional videos to help the people understand the way of using Rainbow Loom. When his invention became exposed to people, that is when his prosperity started. Different toy stores bought his idea and made him very rich.

Last 2012, Ng received his very first order from Learning Express Toys. Rainbow Loom was also sold at Mastermind in Canada and in other specialty stores. A travel-size Rainbow Loom was released on April 2014 and was called "Monster Tail".

Rainbow Loom or "Twistz Bandz" became very popular. Some authors made a book about Rainbow Loom. His work became very famous in summer camps, schools, and homes. Boys and girls also make their own rubber-band bracelets and sometimes call it friendship bracelets. Other people also make their own instructional videos online to share their new ideas. Some students participated in contests such as "Rainbow Loom-a-thon", in which they weave rubber-band bracelets for cancer patients.

For being too much popular and addictive, children began to bring their Rainbow loom kits at school and works on them during break time. This distracts the students from learning and so some schools in New York City banned Rainbow Loom bracelets.
Up until now, the invention of Cheong Choon Ng is still very popular and is still ongoing in markets and online stores.
