The parts of inkjet printers that store the ink for printing are called printer cartridges. Basically, cartridges have one compartment for the ink. Currently, however, cartridges having two or more compartments have become widespread .
Cleaning printer cartridges is both easy and tricky. It is easy because it may be cleaned with isopropyl alcohol or water on a piece of cotton or any soft fabric. It is tricky because isopropyl alcohol, if overly used, can melt the plastic in the printing head, causing damage to the printer . Water, on the other hand, can cause the ink to dry a lot faster than the usual .
Kinds of Cartridges
There are a variety of cartridges depending on different considerations such as heating mechanisms, ink and number of compartments, brands and manufacturers.
As to Heating Mechanism
Heating mechanism is not really a basic feature of printer cartridges. However, their presence in cartridges currently found in the market has become apparent, making the models stand out.
Most brands produce their printer cartridges with chips or electronic devices. The chips or electronic devices are linked with the electronic mechanism of the printer, allowing light current to flow on the cartridge and consequently, on the ink it contains. This keeps the ink in slight warmth and causes it to bubble up to facilitate smooth printing. With this, the ink also serves as a coolant for the printer.
Another heating mechanism is the use of piezoelectronic crystal. Instead of being attached on the cartridge, the piezoelectronic crystal is found on the nozzle of the printer. It changes in size and shape, affecting the ink on the cartridge and hence, producing the same effect of smooth printing.
As to Ink and Number of Compartments
The different kinds of printer cartridges are also classified according to ink and the number of compartments.
Basic cartridges only have one compartment for the key color black. Modern ones have two ways to produce the key color and thus, two kinds of cartridge compartments.
The first kind is composed of two smaller but different cartridges, one for the key color black and the other for the colors cyan, magenta, yellow and black. The first is for printing text while the other is for images.
The second is just the same, having a separate cartridge for black and for other colors. The only difference is that aside from facilitating color combinations, the second kind allows the production of the color black through combining all the colors, in case the first cartridge already ran out of the key color.
Nowadays, models of higher-end printers even have printer cartridges for colors other than cyan, magenta, yellow and black. There are also those that have special ink and cartridge for photographs.
As to Brand and Manufacturer
Brands and manufacturers make their printer cartridges in different manners, creating a particular design identifiable to the brand. Most have cartridges can be clipped on and off the main printer while others make ones that are embedded. There are those that have a single cartridge and the different kinds of ink are just separated by partition or compartments. On the contrary, there are also those that create a single cartridge for every single color.
In any of the ones mentioned, brands and manufacturers create cartridges that are electronically and physically fitted to their printers and as such, cannot be used on printers made by other brands or manufacturers.
