In Checks and Vouchers
Magnetic Ink Character Recognition toner or micr toner is used in printing details at the bottom of checks, deposits slips, and other forms of vouchers. These details include, but are not limited to pertinent characters indicating account numbers, check numbers and their amounts, routes, and other features designating control and protection.
The pertinent characters, particularly the route and account numbers of checks are read through sensitive magnetic or automated devices. Because of this, the quality of the micr toner is very important. Excellent toner quality ensures the consistency and fineness of print that is recognized by automated readers used by the banks. Poor toner quality, on the other hand, produces rough prints, and sometimes, even generates markings across the printed details. Consequently, automated readers reject the checks.
Toner vs. Ink
The inclusion of the work "ink" in micr toner is misleading. Ironically, micr toner is actually powdered and not liquid. Although these two are both used in printing checks and other kinds of vouchers, there are a number of differences between them.
First, ink is used in large scale printing of checks done in commercial printing presses. This kind of printing press is characterized by its big size, often occupying an entire room to print. An example of large-scale commercial printing press for checks can be seen in the 2002 flick Catch Me If You Can starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks. In one of the scenes in the movie, Hanks found DiCaprio making real checks using a large scale printing press.
Toner, on the other hand, is used in laser printers, which are comparatively undersized than large-scale commercial printing presses. While the latter occupies an entire room, a laser printer only requires a corner of a room and at times, even a single space on top of a table or counter.
Second, ink is used in commercial printing while micr toner is used in in-house printing. Commercial printing is the mass production of checks or the printing of a large volume of checks in a short span of time. This creates uniformity among the checks made. Nevertheless, there is also a bigger chance for the checks to be forged due to the said manner of production.
In-house printing, on the other hand, is the printing of the checks by the banks themselves. This kind of printing does not produce a volume as large as that of commercial printing. Thus, in-house printing takes considerable amount of time to produce the desired number of checks and other kinds of vouchers. Still, this allows banks to personalize or customize the checks they make. As a result, the banks can provide more protection details since they are in direct control of making them.
Lastly, using ink has the tendency of creating rough prints while using micr toner makes consistent and fine prints. Rough prints are not significant when checks are manually read and processed. Modern banks, however, prefer the use of micr toner in printing checks since they use magnetic or automated devices in reading checks.
