A laser cartridge, also known as laser toner or toner cartridge, is the part of a laser printer used in printing texts and images. It is the counterpart of the ink cartridge in an inkjet printer. While ink is consumed in inkjet printers and the cartridge remains, laser cartridge in laser printers are the ones being consumed in the printing process.
The basic laser toner or cartridge has two parts, which are both consumable. First is the laser cartridge itself, which can produce up to 2000 pages. Second is the drum unit, which, on the other hand, has a typical life span of 40,000 pages. Some units have the two consumable parts in one piece, requiring the drum unit to be replaced as frequently as the other.
There are three types of laser cartridge according to how they are manufactured, their source, and availability to purchasers.
Genuine
The first type of laser toner or cartridge is the Original Equipment Manufacturer or OEM. This type of laser toner is manufactured by the makers of the printers themselves. They are made of fresh raw materials and as such, mostly referred to as the genuine type. They can be purchased from the manufacturers or from permitted retail stores.
Compatible
The second type of laser cartridge is the Generic or Alternative Brand. Unlike the genuine laser toner, this type is manufactured by third-party companies and not by the manufacturer of the printer. They are made from scratch or from unused toner cartridges through refills. Since they are produced by third party companies, they come in brand names different from the brand or manufacturer of the printer. They also come in lasting power that may be shorter or longer than those produced by the manufacturers. The price is also comparatively lower than the genuine toner cartridge and can be easily found in the market. Because they are fitted to the printers despite difference in brand and manufacturer, they are called the compatible type.
Remanufactured
The third and last type of laser cartridge is the remanufactured cartridge. Just like the genuine type, re-manufactured laser toners are produced by the manufacturers themselves. However, they are made from used OEMs or compatible cartridges. The OEMs or compatibles are taken into pieces, replacing the defective parts or those that already suffered from wear and tear. They are also cleaned and the toner is refilled.
The process of remanufacturing and availability differs from one manufacturer to another. Some require the presentation of the old OEMs before they sell remanufactured ones while others make them available in designated outlets or computer stores.
Environmental Concerns
The issue of production and use of laser cartridge has been a topic among environmentalists in the past few years. Some claim that the use of compatibles and remanufactured laser toners is more environmentally-friendly than the use of the genuine ones. Thus, they encourage the use of the two other kinds over genuine.
Because of the issue raised by advocates of environment protection, manufacturers of laser toners developed programs to regulate the sale and use of their products and to facilitate processes of recycling the same.
