A machine quite essential at present is the photocopy machine. Photocopy machines make the process of reproduction of selected papers much more efficient. The photocopy machine however, cannot be of much use without the presence of a printer toner. Initially, toners were composed of iron oxide, sugar, and carbon powder. Innovations have been made, however, since the introduction of the printer toner and polymers are now melt-mixed with the carbon powder in order to ensure good quality printouts. These toners are not only used in photocopy machines, but are also used for laser printers.
Just like printer cartridges and laser cartridges, the printer toner may come in the black or CMYK variant and also vary in type based on the manufacturer. With the manifestation of these toners also came particle-sized containers varied from around fourteen to sixteen micrometers. Technology however allowed manufacturers to shrink these particles to an estimated eight to ten micrometers, and is continually allowing further improvements to be made. Even with just eight to ten micrometers alone the printer toner is capable of producing an astounding resolution of six hundred dots per inch. In order to get a finer print out of these toners some companies use chemical processes in order to grow particles from molecular reagents.
Ideally, printer toner particles display electrostatic properties and may be washed off skin and garments by means of cold water. It must be taken to note that hot or warm water should not be used in the attempt to remove toner as using such would cause the toner to bond in place. As previously mentioned, toner particles display electrostatic properties. Given this, by all means do not attempt to clean up spillage with the use of an ordinary vacuum. The particles may give of a static discharge that can ignite dust particles in vacuum bags leading to a small explosion. Specialized vacuum cleaners may be purchased in the market that can be used for cleaning up spillages.
Printer toner particles can range from a miniscule 8 to ten micrometers and can easily be suspended in mid-air along with dust particles. Similar to dust, these particles from printer toners pose a threat to human health far worse than the ordinary dust particle. Printer toner particles prove to be greatly irritating to people suffering from different respiratory diseases. A study has even proven that microscopic particles from these toners show to be in fact carcinogenic.
Like printer and laser cartridges, there are environmental concerns to put into consideration when using printer toners. It is true that most toner particles go to the supposed sheets of paper; however, the majority of which will in fact be dumped to be recycled. It proves to be fairly difficult to remove toner from the pulp. Regardless of society's ability to find a process to ease the removal of toner, it still proves to be a difficult feat. Most recycling facilities resort to mixing papers printed with toners with other waste materials into a sludge with no commercial use whatsoever.
