Back in the 1940s, the processing of checks was always done manually, which deemed to be time-consuming. Due to the increase in the number of checks, society sought for the automation of the said process. By the mid 1950s the Stanford Research Institute designed the first automated system using Magnetic Ink Character Recognition or MICR in which standards were still applied in order to assure uniformity amongst financial institutions. This automated process is used to read important documents such as checks in the fastest and most accurate means possible with the use of magnetic equipment and the micr toner which typically contains iron oxide.
Though used in different avenues such as sales promotions, airline tickets, credit cards, coupons, and insurance premium receipts, the MICR is more popularly used by financial institutions nowadays to ensure individual and bank security. With the use of micr toner the characters printed on each check give the recipient necessary information for processing the check, namely the account number, bank routing number, check number, and in some cases the amount of the check. The MICR is even identified by the American National Standards Institute or the ANSI as the designated language specification for paper based payment transfer systems.
In order to achieve MICR printing successfully, the Micr toner may be used in the case of laser printers. MICR printing may also be accomplished with the use of a high-impact printing system and ribbons of the magnetic material . MICR printing, however, cannot be done with the use of inkjet printers due to clogging, settling of ink, and high levels of inconsistency. The micr toner to be used is specially formulated with magnetic iron oxide, which gives the printed characters the magnetic signals. The presence of magnetic iron oxide is vital in the micr toner as using other toners with no magnetic properties may be visually correct but will not be accepted by readers when processed. The characters found printed on the MICR bands are usually located at the bottom of checks. At times, banks may even impose charges due to counterfeit issues. The magnetically-charged printing allows each uniquely shaped character (shown below) to be recognized by reader-sorter machines with the help of the magnetic signal it creates. It is of course vital, especially given the high rates of speed and unique waveforms that each character needs to be printed clearly, free of unnecessary marks, and clear of any deformations whatsoever.

MICR toners are not limited for purchase by personnel from financial institutions; these are available for purchase by anyone from different websites like www.ebay.com and www.lasercartridges.com. Given the functions of these toners, it is only fitting that these come at a weighty price. Like other cartridges, toners are manufactured by numerous companies and it is ideal to look at the quality of the product rather than its price. The purchase of premium cartridges is by far better than purchasing remanufactured cartridges as it provides more reliable performance and yields a consistent total number of prints per cartridge.
