A Laser cartridge, or also known as a toner cartridge, is used for a specific kind of printer; namely the laser printer. A laser printer is one of the many kinds of printers existing today. This type of printer makes use of a laser beam and a drum in order to produce charged images, which are then transferred onto paper with the use of toners or dry ink and the drum. The laser cartridge used for this particular printer hold toner powder that produces the images on paper once the printing process has been completed. Many people are not aware of it but laser printers are quite common, being able to be found almost anywhere. Photocopying stands, for example, use a laser printer in their business. Similar to the inkjet cartridges, there are also different types of laser cartridges.
The first would be the genuine type, or the Original Equipment Manager (OEM). This laser cartridge type is solely produced by specific printer manufacturers. Given that these cartridges are produced originally by the manufacturing companies themselves, it follows that these cartridges are also much more expensive compared to its alternatives such as refills and remanufactured cartridges.
The second type of cartridge would be the compatible type, also known as the Alternative Brand. This type of laser cartridge is not produced by the manufacturers but is rather produced from scratch by third party companies, of which are sold under different brand names . This type may be considered less reliable than the genuine cartridges. However, it is in fact a cost-effective alternative having some brand names even exceeding the quality of genuine cartridges.
The third and last type is the remanufactured cartridge. From its name, this type of laser cartridge is disassembled after one use. In this process, parts that are amiss are replaced and the cartridge is then refilled with toners. Furthermore, unlike OEM's and Alternative Brands, re-manufactured cartridges are usually not available off-the-shelf, though some companies may provide these as well. Ideally, the provision of empty cartridges by the customers to the third party companies is required in order to attain this. These cartridges however are less preferred by consumers as given that these are reused, leakages from the cartridges, malfunctions, and damages to the printers are more common and are more likely to happen as compared to the previous two types. Despite these, advocates urge that using this type is more environmentally-friendly.
In order to produce laser cartridges, more or less two quarts of petroleum are needed to be burned in the process for one cartridge alone. That is around an estimate of two hundred liters of petroleum in North America alone. Though many manufacturers responded to this issue by means of a recycling process, several advocates have claimed that these processes are not always deemed environmentally-friendly as well. With the use of re-manufactured cartridges, there is a lesser need to burn more petroleum in order to fulfill customer demands that at the same time pose a lesser threat to the environment.
