For the past several years the earth has been facing serious environmental problems ranging from mere littering to rapid forest degradation. Naturally, science has found ways to at least minimize the damage it itself has admittedly done to the environment. Solar panels have been introduced, renewable energy in replacement for fossil fuels, machines that turn trash into landfill, and many other technologies are what science has thankfully brought to society. Even with these technologies, the condition of the environment continually dwindles at a steady pace given all other factors that society adamantly fails to acknowledge. Environmentalists or other scientists may be aware of other factors that greatly affect the state of the environment; however, it is also important that consumers as well are aware of these. Even the gadgets that seem harmless pose a threat to the environment when not used properly; for example, the printer.
Aside from the fact that printers provide consumers an easier way to produce written (in this case, printed) output in which sometimes even the most unnecessary documents get printed, thus leading to a waste in paper, the mere process undergone in order to create key parts to ensure complete functionality of the printer in some ways pose environmental threats. Yes, one printer per household is enough and that does not seem that bad, production or environment-wise. However remember that every printer, in order to function, needs printer cartridges.
Like many other materials today, printer cartridges can be recycled but it is arguably true that a large fraction of printer cartridges used by consumers are thrown out into the trash. This may not seem like a problem being such small pieces of plastic, but keep in mind that this material takes from 450 to 1000 years to decompose. Not only that, the amount of greenhouse emissions from the production of printer cartridges have been computed and the number is indeed no joke. Around 4.8 kilograms of carbon dioxide are released into the atmosphere for every single cartridge produced. To make an even bigger point, around 350 million cartridges annually are used globally and a majority of which are thrown out to landfills.
Some manufacturers have taken action with the help of the voices of some activists. Many manufacturers at present produce cartridges that are refillable, giving consumers the option to get their printer cartridges refilled instead of purchasing new ones. Some companies even give consumers the option to hand in their used cartridges in order to be recycled and resold once it has been refilled. To this day, however, even with these solutions presented to the populace a great number still remain adamant and continually prefer new printer cartridges over recycled ones due to questionable quality provided by recycled cartridges. It can be acceptable to purchase new cartridges every now and then when deemed a necessity, however it is highly recommended to go for the cost-efficient and much more environmentally-friendly alternative.
Printers may be a luxury for society now, but it does not come free of cost. If this "luxury" is continually abused and consumers remain adamant, it is possibly that this luxury may eventually lead to complications.
