Technology nowadays allows people to perform numerous tasks in much simpler ways; one of these tasks would be writing. People no longer have to suffer through the painstaking ordeal of writing down a five-page assignment by hand. Now, people, not just students, are privileged to simply type down what they need and with the press of one button it comes out printed neatly on a piece of paper via a machine called a printer. This printer, however, would not be able to provide this service without its key component, the printer cartridges.
Printer cartridges are equivalent to the ink or lead of the typical pen and pencil, respectively. Without printer cartridges, neither pictures nor mere words would be able to be produced from printers. This type of cartridge is mainly used by the inkjet printer - what can be considered one of the most common types of printers within households.
The cartridge is the component in the printer that holds the ink required to produce the desired words or images on paper. Printer cartridges may hold either the colors CMYK or cyan, magenta, yellow, and black respectively, or simply just black ink.
Like many other technologies at present, numerous brands provide society with printers; these printers come with cartridges. At present there are two specific designs of printer cartridges, namely thermal and piezoelectric. Inkjet printers made by HP, Canon, and Lexmark (excluding Epson) use thermal cartridges, which depend on a smooth flow of ink established by resistors found in each ink reservoir. The piezoelectric cartridges are used in inkjet printers made by Epson. The flow of ink from these cartridges depends on the changing shape or size of the piezoelectric crystal located in each nozzle. Over the years several innovations have been made on printer cartridges to fit the changing needs of society.
An example of such previously mentioned innovation would be the availability of two distinct forms of black ink. One form of black ink is designed to readily blend in with various colors (the K in CMYK) while the other form is designed as a water-proof variant specifically for printing text. Another example of said innovation is the creation of ink cartridges that contain ink specially formulated for printing better and clearer photographs on photo paper.
The help provided by printers and cartridges however, do not come free. Having a printer and one supply of ink cartridges does not guarantee anyone access to unlimited printing. Like the typical pen, cartridges run out of ink, and as such, need to be replaced—with a literal cost. Cartridges do not come in cheap especially those produced by the original manufacturer. A better alternative to purchasing new cartridges once the ink runs out would be to have it refilled. It not only is cheaper, it is also more environmentally-friendly. Used cartridges are often used in landfills but even so, the material used to create these take up to 1,000 years to decompose. Printers do provide alleviation from the pains of writing, but do keep in mind the pains it imparts on the environment. Use ink wisely.
