Create A Vision Then Set Your Goals

Almost everyone has set goals for the new year. We do it every year and for many of us, every year by Jan 15, we have given up on our goals. Why is that? It is because we do not have a vision as to what our life will be like if we achieve our goals.

The vision is important, in fact essential to achieving the goals we set. For example, I might say I want to lose 10 lbs and so I am going to go to the gym every day. Getting up early and dragging my body to the gym is painful and after a few days of it, I look in the mirror and I don't see much progress so I get distracted by coffee and donuts and pretty soon I am back into my same old routine. What is wrong with this picture?

What is missing is a powerful, emotionally charged vision of what life will be like when I achieve my stated goal. Some people call it your "Why." But it really transcends "Why". "Why" is factual, logical, non-emotional. I want to be attractive is a "why." A vision is me seeing in my mind's eye, members of the opposite sex being attracted to me. The vision is emotional. It has power! I want to be strong gives me a vision of lifting weight. A want to be more athletic gives me a vision of running, skiing, or whatever my desired vision is. Do you get the idea?

When we have a strong compelling vision, it makes the early rise to go to the gym more palatable and the donut less appealing.

Let's talk about another common goal, more money. I want to make more money in 2014 is a tough, boring, unattractive goal. It carries no energy. It can't last long. Besides you don't really want more money. What are you going to do with it? Put it under your mattress?

Well no! That's not why you want more money is it? You want to go on vacation, take your children to Disneyland, spend more time with your family, go skiing or whatever floats your boat. But simply saying "I want these things" doesn't bring the emotional charge necessary to achieve them.

Some people talk about digging deep into your why, looking for the "Why that makes you cry." I think it is not necessarily finding the why that makes you cry, it is generating the vision of what life will be like. It is creating a vision of you at Disneyland with your kids, seeing their smiles and hearing their squeals of delight and holding that vision long enough for the reality to manifest itself.

Remember your thoughts are your previews of your life's coming attractions. So think deeply inspired thoughts backed by a vision of what life will be like and take some action to move toward your goal every day and success will be yours.
