The various teams in dragon boat races make paddling look easy to do, but this is not always the case for those that are aiming to win. Most people believe that these dragon boat racing groups only focus on the upper body workout when they are in the boats. The actual fact is that trainers actually require additional fitness routines since dragon boat racing is a full-body workout. Most trainers require the team as a whole to do various exercises before they even enter the water.
Some fitness routines consist of jogging for a specific amount of time before the start of the stretching exercises. Some trainers even require their teams to cross-train individually or a whole such as swimming, biking, or working out at the gym. The reason for this is that the legs are also a critical part of dragon boat racing since the hips and chest also rotates while paddling. When the hips and chest rotation is done properly, the boat also moves even in the absence of paddling while maximizing the paddle reach.
Dragon boat paddling is a series of muscle exercise and rest from the time the paddle is dipped in the water until its exit. The recovery portion of the dragon boat paddling is when the torso of the team member starts to rotate and lean forward for another stroke cycle. Most fitness routines seen in the nearest gym are not as intense as the number of stroke cycles required to move the dragon boat from one end to another.
If you look at dragon boat members, most of these individuals do not have a specific body type or height. However, a vast majority of these racing team members are endurance and precision athletes since dragon racing requires these individuals to work as a team. The team trainer who mistakenly puts an individual to the wrong side of the boat will slow down the boat speed since most members will have trouble in adopting an unfamiliar stroke style. This is because most dragon boat trainers permanently assign the team members to either the left or the right side of the boat.
Regular Fitness Routines
Due to the amount of force that is needed to move water from one blade of the paddle to another, most dragon boat members need to enhance their upper body strength. This means that dragon boat members will have to go through strict fitness routines to enhance the strength of their upper body. Most of the paddling power seen in dragon boat racing is concentrated on the back, shoulder and trunk muscles of the team members instead of the arm muscles.
A fitness trainer will need to modify the training program of a racing team member especially since additional fitness routines must be added to the lower body. The purpose of the supplementary training is that it is used to offset the boat paddling training where the main muscles of the body are the back, shoulder, trunk, and arm muscles. The main difference of the fitness routines developed for boat racing members when compared to other athletes is upper body endurance training.
