Bob Stewart a General Motors representative made a presentation at the fall meeting of the National Automotive Service Technician Fountation in 2013. His presentation was titled ' Who's Cheating Whom'.
It was an interesting presentation that provided insight into the current GM and their thinking, and more importantly how they view their cusztomers. In press releases and news stories GM suggests they have changed, but unfortunately more of the same old GM corporate mentality was clearly shown.
The total presentation was geared toward convincing those in attendance, both physically and remotely that they should buy GM's Tech II. This is the tool Bob Stewart refers to as GM's Scan Tool.
It is a shame that GM has to resort to these old tactics to sell their tools. It would be great if GM actually produced a scan tool that did something unique or had capabilities not available anywhere else, like the 2X80S from Straight Talk Automotive. Unfortunately, this is not how GM has ever operated, except for a short time during the 1980s.
After viewing the recorded presentation several times and reading the editors notes, I am now more fully convinced that GM has not changed. I view GM from the 1960s until now as 3 distinct companies. There was the GM from the 1960s, then the GM of the 1980s, and GM of the 1990s which has not gone away but is now known as Government (handout) Motors.
In the book 'On a Clear Day You Can See General Motors', John Delorean talked extensively about the corporate culture at General Motors and the fourteenth floor where the real power rests at GM. The book is probably out of print, but a quick check at Amazon reveals plenty of both new and used available. I highly recommend the book to anyone that is ready to look closely at General Motors. Remember to read it from a wider perspective to truly understand GM.
During the presentation by Bob Stewart, I kept hoping that some of the early GM would emerge, but it did not. Now I am more convinced than ever that GM should have been allowed to go bankrupt. In the 1960s GM had a 65% market share in the USA and was a worldwide leader in sales, engineering and innovation. Today that is all gone, 2013 sales figures show GM is now the third largest automaker in the world, behind Toyota and VolksWagen, both of whom GM considered inferior. At the rate people continue to buy other manufactuers vehicles, I wonder how long it will be before Tata Motors of India drops GM to position 4.
Read the editor's transcript of Bob Stewart's presentation with editorial comments, then decide IF you see the old GM or a new GM.
