The 4 "must haves" of a home based business

Are you looking for some extra income? Maybe a way out of a dead-end job/career? My name is Joe, and I finally found a way to do just that, and decided to take some of the guesswork out of it for you.

First, let me back up a little. In 2009, after laying off about 100 guys in the construction industry, it was my turn. What I thought was a secure, middle-management job of over 5 years, turned into a 2 week severance package. Similar jobs now paid less than half of what I had been making, unemployment wouldn't pay at all, and I ended up working for a family member at about a third of my previous salary, because that's the best I could find. I started looking into home-based businesses as a way out. I went thru about 10 different companies and with every one, just after I gave them my money, I found the catch, something they hadn't explained, that made it very difficult for me to make money, and I failed.

Well, I finally found a home-based business that works, and I've been looking at it to see what is different, Why does this work when others did not? Yes, I have grown and learned a lot, but there is something besides me that makes the difference. The business that you choose has to provide a solid foundation, or you and I can't win.

If a company has the following qualities, you have a good shot.

One: They have to be well funded! Many companies are started by people who need to make money more than you and I do; and they go get investors. In this scenario, the owners and the investors want to get paid first! You don't want to be at the bottom of the list come payday.

Two: The company must have strong leadership! Research the leaders of the company. Can you trust them? Are you excited about being partners with them? If not, If you aren't excited about being their partner, you'll doubt them at the first sign of an issue, or you'll jump to another company as soon as someone offers it because you're unsure.

Three: The products should be effective at what they do, they should be proprietary to the company, and be something people will buy over and over so that each sale makes you money over and over again.

Fourth: The pay plan/commission structure should be generous, and promote teamwork so that people are happy, they stick around, and stick together. If the plan has you working separate from your sponsor, dividing your attention, it becomes competitive instead of cooperative, and the residual aspect of the business goes away and all of a sudden you'll feel like you have another job.

If any one of these things is missing, the company can't give you what you are really looking for; a true residual income that provides the lifestyle you want to live. Open your mind, and trust your gut. No home-based business is for everyone, but in today's economy, everyone should be in a home business. Start your plan B before it becomes an emergency like it was for me. It's way easier to think straight and talk to people if you're not desparate.
