The dictionary defines wellbeing as the state of being happy, healthy and prosperous. Although in actuality these are the end goals to achieving wellbeing, rarely do people realize that these are their end goals. For example, a person who has been struggling to lower down his blood pressure may be successful in lowering this down through medication. In this state, this person still cannot be considered healthy, ergo is not in a state of wellbeing.
Being in a state of wellbeing connotes wellness in all 5 essential elements namely career, social, finances, physical and environment.
Financial Wellbeing
Being in a state of financial wellbeing does not necessarily mean having a high income. A person may earn $100,000 per year but if he has obligations which will prevent him from stopping working at any point in his life, he cannot be considered financially sound. On the other hand, if a person only earns $50,000 a year but has a some savings and is able afford small vacations, then this person may be considered as being financially sound.
There is only one straightforward formula for financial soundness: spend less than what you earn. This way, you get to save money for future events that may need funding. Many people have the tendency to accumulate material possessions. However, despite this, they are still not happy. Thus, we cannot say that financial soundness is having all the things that your want: because all our wants are limitless.
Career Wellbeing
Career wellbeing is having a job that you like and looking forward to doing it everyday. Your career is a great factor in fulfilling over-all wellbeing because one's career , if flourishing, paves the way to the fulfillment of the other elements. You spend most of your waking hours in your job, therefore, it must be something that you feel is worthwhile doing. Social wellbeing includes not only our personal interpersonal relationships, but also our social support networks as well as our involvement with our community. Ours is not a sanitized world. To achieve social wellbeing, we should be able to cope in a world where good and bad exist and that we should be able to communicate effectively to resolve conflicts and overcome differences.
Physical Wellbeing
Physical wellbeing is our ability to identify what makes our body work efficiently and effectively, taking into consideration its limitations. It may be enhanced by regular exercise and eating the right kind of food. More than the physical aspect, physical wellbeing has a lot of psychological benefits which includes increased self esteem and a sense of direction, among others.
Community Wellbeing
Community wellbeing considers a person's involvement in community activities which relate in particular to the alleviation from the problems of poverty, ignorance on issues as effects of pornography on teenagers, or even the promotion of homelessness. Volunteerism is important to community wellbeing as the person is made aware of the problems so that he does his part in helping to provide solutions for these problems.
Wellbeing encompasses not only the internal faculties of a person but takes into consideration as well a person's linkage to the world he lives in. It is thus important to make sure that all these elements are taken cared of to ensure each person's contribution to the community as a whole.
