Contrary to popular belief, not all fats are bad. There are what we call healthy fats, those coming from olive oil, coconut, safflower, cod liver, canola as well as omega 3 DHA found in wild salmon, walnuts, macadamia nuts and chia seeds. The fats in these foods and those foods which contain the fats coming from these foods can actually induce weight loss and eventually trim down your waist.
The trick to making these oils work for you is to take 2 tablespoons of these oils first thing in the morning prior to the start of each meal. Having these oils before meals curb appetite.
Also it would be best to take in these oils with non-cooked foods so your best bets would be salad greens, basted with olive oil and sprinkled with chia seeds or salmon sushi.
A direct approach to getting the benefits of these healthy oils is to take them in their original state. However, feelings of saturation may be felt so that it is advisable to try these foods in combination with other foods that you eat to arrest the feeling of having had too much of these foods. Following are some suggestions on how you may vary your daily food intake without totally giving up on the intake of these foods with healthy fats:
Olive Oil
The Mediterranean Diet, which proposes the wide use of olive oil in its food, has been cited for protecting people from metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is a disorder where energy utilization does not reach its peak so nutrients are stored as fats which normally show in the mid-section of the body. This state can be caused by a co-occurence of at least three of the five medical conditions: central obesity, elevated levels of blood pressure, elevated fasting plasma glucose, high serum triglycerides, and low levels of good cholesterol.
Olive oil doesn't really taste bad. But for other people, taking 2 tablespoons of this oil first thing in the morning may not be palatable for them. One trick is to mix some greens, put a dash or two of olive oil, and sprinkle with safflower seeds.
For snacks, you can take a slice or two of wheat toast, brush this with olive oil and top with chopped olives and tomatoes. (bruschetta)
Chia Seeds
Chia comes from a flowering plan of the mint family and can be found in Mexico and Guatemala. It is known to be a great source of healthy Omega 3 fats and fiber. Chia Seeds can be eaten as is or milled and sprinkled in any food that you eat.
If buying chia from the open market, the seeds should be colored black or white. Chia users also advise against fake chias which have a reddish color.
Aside from sprinkling them in your food which adds crispiness and grit, chia may also be put in hot milk and stirred until thick.
Virgin Coconut Oil
Coconut oil contains a lot of saturated fats. In fact coconut is 90% saturated fat. One thing different though is that the saturated fat in coconut are the so-called Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT) which are fatty acids of medium length. MCTs are metabolized in a different way in that from the digestive tract, they go directly to the liver and are used as quick sources of energy. These sources of energy, or ketone bodies can have healing effects on brain disorders which may be the reason why energy expenditure is hastened. Brain functions are stimulated so that physical movements are more intense. Thus in the long term, one experiences a decrease in weight because of more energy expenditure.
Virgin coconut oil comes in its natural flavor as well as in mango and jackfruit flavors. A dose of 1 to 2 tablespoons taken first thing in the morning prove to be potent in helping one lose fat, especially in the abdominal cavity.
Nuts and Fruits
A trail mix, a combination of almonds, plums, raising and other nuts may be a good snack source. However, care must be taken if you experience elevated levels of sugar, in which case, you stick to either almonds or macadamia.
And as with all other weight loss regimens, exercise is important to boost cardio vascular endurance and promote good blood circulation. In the long run, you will seeing the benefits of eating the right foods and maintaining cardio vascular health through regular exercise.
