For most of us today, the method of using music for healing may be unfamiliar, but it has actually been around for several millenniums. In many indigenous cultures, music for healing practices that have begun centuries ago can still be observed. There are also a lot of records left behind in Egypt and in other old civilizations that have descriptions of methods of treatment where music was used, either as audio "anesthetic" to alleviate physical pain, or as a mystical-like cure to specific diseases.
Perhaps one of the most famous record of healing where music was involved is the story of King David. First of all, what is odd about this record is that most people, religious and non-religious alike, fail to recognize the story for what it is: an account of a successful cure using music.
According to the Bible, the future King David was just a boy when the then King Saul suffered an illness. The spirit of God has fled King Saul and as a result, evil forces plagued his mind. It was prophesied that such a time would come. Luckily, the solution had also been included in the prophecy: a boy gifted with music would come and help drive away the evil influence from the mind of the King.
The boy was the future King David, and things happened as it had been foretold. From his humble home, David was summoned to the palace. In the King's room, he played his harp for the King and the music coming from him not only drove away the evil influence , it also provided a healing effect on the King's burdened mind. The music soothed him, allowed his spirits to soar and his entire being to become well again.
In the context of the Bible, this event is just one among the many miracles caused by a powerful God, but if we set aside the context for a moment, we would recognize that this is actually a triumph of music for healing. Through this story, we could see that even a long time ago, the truest purpose of music is to heal, whether it is the body or the mind which is sick.
Music for healing, though different in form and method to other meditative arts, is still a way to reach another level of consciousness. Under meditation, healing of the mind and body could be possible. Trying to meditate using music could be easier and more effective because the mind has something other than itself to focus on. Another reason why music for healing has immediate and tangible effect is that music communicates directly with the brain.
During meditation, we are often in the same condition we were before birth. Most of our senses are either minimized or shut down in order to better concentrate on the sound of our own being-the sound of our heart, our breathing, our fluids going through their course inside us-these sounds are our own special music. When we are unwell, physically or mentally, our body's music changes . Music for healing works by changing our body's sound back to the way it was when it was in a healthy state.
All of us have the ability to be a King Saul or a King David-we are capable of opening ourselves up to music's influence, and we ourselves could use music not just for ourselves, but others as well. What some of us needs is finding the correct method to achieve it.
