Paracord or formally known as Parachute Chord was originally used by the US Air Force for their parachutes during the World War II. It's a lightweight nylon material known for being elastic and its ability to withstand heavy weight. The U.S. Troopers were the first ones to use it, but the US military troops also had access to it.
There are 6 types of paracord with varying capacity limit and other characteristics:
• Type I – the minimum strength is 45kg (100lb). It only contains 1 core yarn.
• Type IA – the minimum strength is 43kg (95lb). It has no core yarn.
• Type II – the minimum strength is 181kg (400lb). It varies from 4 to 7 core yarns.
• Type IIA – the minimum strength is 102 kg (225lb). It has also no core yarn.
• Type III – the most used type. It is also known as 550 Paracord. It has minimum strength of 249kg (550lb). It contains 7 to 9 core yarns, and made up of 3 strands per yarn.
• Type IV – the minimum strength is 349kg (750lb). It has 11 core yarns.
The core yarn also known as kern, is made up of several smaller yarns depending on the paracord type. It consists of two or three nylon, either commercially made or MIL grade.
Originally, the paracord was intended for military use only. After the war ended, people discovered its numerous uses. Civilians also recognized its strength. It was first sold in the military surplus, after sometime civilians had access to it as well. Though it has become widely available, not all paracord are created the same.
Authentic paracord is often referred to as MIL grade or Military grade. It is available in the following colors only: black, red, brown, orange (emergency orange), navy blue, foliage green, white and olive drab. These colors passed quality checking-procedures and were assured their properties were not damaged by the dying materials.
While commercially available paracord is being sold in different colors, it must be put into consideration that colorants can affect the quality of the yarn and strands that binds it together. This may degrade the strength and elasticity of the paracord. To easily identify a low quality nylon, check the quantity of core yarns and if there are raw materials present, other than nylon.
These five characteristics of the paracord make it an all-around tool:
1. Its durability.
It can be reused, without affecting its elasticity.
2. Its strength.
Its capacity varies from 45 kg to 349 kg depending on the type.
3. Paracord is water & mildew resistant.
These qualities allow it to be used in different weather conditions while its strength and durability isn't affect.
4. It is lightweight.
Authentic paracord follows certain MIL standards, ensuring they are light to carry around.
5. Unique Inner Strands.
One of the unique qualities it has is the inner strand can be used as a thread for sewing and other needs that require finer thread.
These characteristics make the paracord, as a survival and essential tool to have. Common uses for it may include as a tow tug, for securing items and tying poles. While complex uses may involve, transforming it to a ladder or weaving a hammock out of it. The uses of a paracord is limitless, you just need to be creative.
Truly, the paracord is one of the things you should always have on-hand.
