Although it would need only 40 mg of Vitamin B12 to last a person his entire life, the deficiency in Vitamin B12 has to be kept in check because the vitamin is essential in red blood cell formation, in DNA creation and in the maintenance of a healthy nervous system.
There are two main causes of vitamin B12 deficiency. The first one is deficiency due to type of food intake. The vitamin comes from animal products so that vegans are more prone to being vitamin B12 deficient than their omnivore counterparts. The second is due to problems regarding absorption. The problem could either be due to anyone of the following: chronic drinking, stomach or intestinal diseases, or operations which take out parts of the small intestine.
Vitamin B12 supplements are taken in to help fill the gaps when RDA (Required Dietary Allowances) are not fulfilled by a person's vitamin B12 production from food intake. B12 has been known to be potent in the prevention of megaloblastic anemia (a disorder where cells do not divide during red blood cell formation)or pernicious anemia (where a person experiences problems in absorption of the vitamin). If left untreated, this could lead to permanent nerve damage, and in extreme cases, death.
Argument Between Injectable vs Oral Supplements
Studies have shown that Vitamin B12 deficiency is caused more by the absorption problem rather than the deficiency of the vitamin in food that is ingested: thus, the confusion between some natural doctors whether to use intramuscular or oral supplements. It has been seen though that even with patients who have pernicious anemia, they are able to absorb about 1.2% of the orally administered supplements. Thus, it could be safe to say that persons in vitamin B12 therapy have the option of either getting the injections or taking oral supplements.
One thing going for taking vitamin B12 supplements, aside from its convenience is its cost. A person's cost for one year's vitamin B12 supplements is still way below the total cost of having it injected four times a year by a doctor. However, a person who does not make effort in taking his oral supplements is advised to have this administered intramuscular.
There would be instances though when vitamin B12 is administered for its healing properties. Nerve related illnesses like fatigue, Bell's palsy, and subdeltoid bursitis need supraphysiological levels of B12 for it to be effective. Thus, high doses of vitamin B12 must be administered. These come only in serum concentrates and can be administered only parenterally.
Vitamin B12 supplements or injectables may be used to address deficiencies in the vitamin which may be caused either by the vitamin's deficiency from food intake or problems with absorption. Both have been proven to effectively address vitamin B12 deficiencies.
For its pharmacological properties though, very high concentrations of the vitamin are needed to cure the maladies and these are available only in serum form for administration parenterally.
