When one feels a sense of lethargy, is not able to concentrate, or lacks energy to go about his daily chores, more often than not, the person would dismiss this as something preparatory to flu so that he would just pop in some paracetamol pills to feel better. Little does he know that these could be signs of what 15 to 40% of Americans suffer from: Vitamin B12 deficiency.
A healthy person only needs 2.4 mcg (RDA) of vitamin B12 to address his daily requirement. This increases to 25-100 mcg for older people as stomach lining changes affect absorption. Vitamin B12 supplements are thus recommended as these are already in its free form and doesn't need to be separated by the gastric juices from the stomach.
If the body needs only a small amount of this vitamin, then why is it important that we keep it at its required levels? Ironically, this often ignored vitamin plays a great part in cell formation and in the production of red blood cells. It is also important in maintaining a healthy nervous system. Unfortunately, it is only when the vitamin B12 deficiency symptoms manifest, is it given attention.
Aside from poor concentration and seeming chronic tiredness, vitamin B12 deficiency may also manifest in unexplained moodiness, tingling or numbing of hands and feet (more particularly at the ends), and cracked and reddish tongue. When these appear, it would be best to consult your doctor.
Your doctor might prescribe Vitamin B12 supplements which almost always come in a complex together with the other B vitamins riboflavin, thiamine, and biotin, among others. The good news is you can take the vitamin B12 supplements to address your deficiency but you never have to worry about side effects if you go over your limit.
The list of illnesses that this little ignored vitamin could result to in case of deficiency may make one to consider checking his current levels. These may include bouts of depression, psychoses, memory loss, incontinence, loss of gustatory and olfactory functions, and nerve damage, which could be irreparable.
Aside from the uncontrollable states where one finds himself needing in the vitamin like certain types of anemias, there are also self induced factors that pave way to the vitamin's deficiency like staying on a strictly vegetarian diet, weight loss surgery, and chronic drinking. Of course, the last two can be remedied by a complete turnaround in diet habits and cessation of drinking, respectively.
Since the body reuses vitamin B12 as it is excreted by the bile, it would take quite a while, maybe even lasting up to 20 years, for one to discover his deficiency of the vitamin. This explains why the deficiency is detected more in the elderly than in the younger ages. By then, it might be too late as age related sicknesses have already set in. A shorter period of about three years would manifest the deficiency if the problem is with absorption.
Although it only takes very little vitamin B12 to last a person's lifetime (40 mg which is just about 1/6 the size of a small aspirin), maintaining sufficient levels is as important as this is needed in the body building process. Fortunately, taking vitamin B12 supplements may address the deficiency, especially when problems concern absorption as in its free form can be easily ingested by the body sub lingually or through sprays.
