Vitamin B12 is a water soluble vitamin essential for the body's proper genetic make up. The body's primary source of Vitamin B12 are animal products. How much of a particular vitamin a healthy body requires is dictated by the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA).
The Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the National Academy of Sciences provides the RDA for all vitamins and minerals the body needs. Upper values have been set to guard against poisoning in case higher levels of a vitamins or minerals have been reached. Values indicated in the RDA are values set by the Food and Nutrition Board to indicate levels a healthy body would need for sustenance. RDA levels vary with age. For Vitamin B12, RDA for an adult is 2.4 mcg.
Much as everybody wants to closely approximate the RDA levels, several factors may result to values way low the RDA. For vitamin B12, these are lower absorption rates by the body of the vitamins and minerals and deficiencies brought about by the type of food that one eats.
It is because of these deficiencies that supplements are needed. They try to bridge the gap between your actual intake of these vitamins and minerals versus prescribed RDAs.
Supplements on the other hand provide a daily value (DV), regardless of age. The daily value is expressed in terms of percentages and this reflects how much of the vitamin or mineral you are getting per unit of supplement you take. This is based on an estimated 2,000 calorie intake for the day. Thus, vitamin B12 supplements that show a percentage DV of 400% only means that you are getting 4 times your daily allowance of vitamin B12 per unit of supplement. Since the upper limit for the RDA of Vitamin B12 is negligible (NE), you do not have to worry about going over maximum levels and harming yourself.
There will be instances where vitamin B12 supplements will show a DV of 1,400%. With the very little amount of vitamin B12 needed by the body (approx. 2.5 mcg-RDA) one would ask why this percentage is being manufactured. This could be because of claims by serum companies that they are more superior than supplements because of their high concentrations.
Of course, all these claims have to be backed up by the manufacturers as there are no pre-audits being made to check on these supplements before these are put out in the stores.
As supplements fall under the category of "food" , the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has an oversight function with regard claims and advertisements made by these manufacturers regarding their supplements.
Because of this, the manufacturers are given the responsibility to ensure accuracy and truthfulness on all their claims. It is also for this reason that FDA has required all supplement manufacturers to put a disclaimer that "FDA has not evaluated their claims" and that "the supplement is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent a disease" as it is only drugs that can do this.
