Vitamin B12 is essential for proper function and development of the brain, the nervous system and the production of red blood cells.
Although vitamin B12 plays an important part in the maintenance of a healthy nervous system, there are people who are at risk to its deficiency:
1. Those who suffer from megaloblastic anemia, a disease caused by non-splitting of the cells ;
2. Persons who have had diseases involving the stomach and the intestines which secrete the enzymes and proteins that aid in the absorption of Vitamin B12;
3. Pregnant/lactating mothers, although vitamin B12 levels will stabilize after a time (unless the mother is either a vegan or vegetarian );
4. Vegans or vegetarians as Vitamin B12's sources are animal products;
5. People who have been exposed to severe/chronic drinking;
6. People in their old age.
Safety Concerns for People Wanting to Take Vitamin B12 Supplements
Although indications are unclear, pregnant women who may be asked to take vitamin B12 supplements must take care not to exceed the RDA for pregnant women which is 2.6 mcg. People with abnormally high levels of red blood cells should see a doctor first as there are sicknesses that manifest vitamin B12 deficiency which could only worsen when supplements are taken. Those suffering from Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy, a degenerative disease passed on by the mother to the offspring should not take Vitamin B12 supplements as these could worsen the condition and can lead to blindness. People with cobalt allergies are also warned against this supplement as the main component of this vitamin is cobalt.
Contraindications for Vitamin B12
People suffering from vitamin B12 deficiency should not take folic acid. Folic acid, one of the B vitamins prescribed for pregnant women, may hide the symptoms of B12 deficiency and may result to severe nerve damage if left unattended.
Potassium supplements are also known to decrease levels of Vitamin B12. To avoid this, eat potassium rich foods as bananas, sweet potatoes, tomato sauce, beet greens and beans.
Vitamin C supplements also decrease levels of vitamin B12. To counter this, drink your vitamin C supplements 2 hours after your meals when nutrients would have already been absorbed.
Alcohol is the number one enemy of Vitamin B12. It would be best to totally eliminate its use to prevent further nerve damage.
Recommended Intake
RDA for vitamin B12 supplement for adults is 2.4 mcg. For those suffering from certain types of anemia the following are the recommended intakes: pernicious -maximum of 100,000 mcg; high levels of homocysteine - 500 mcg combined with 5.5 mg of folic acid; age related macular degeneration, 1 mg combined with 2.5 mg. Folic acid and 50 mg pyridoxine.
It would always be best to consult your doctor first before taking any vitamin supplements, vitamin B12 included, as symptoms of the vitamin deficiency may be masked when taking other supplements. Tell your doctor about the supplements you are currently taking as although these supplements are supposed to be harmless taken in the right dosages, combinations, some may have contraindications with other supplements/drugs and could do more damage than good.
