Mixing cement with a half inch drill without a Cement mixer.
So you want to mix a small batch of cement but you do not own a cement mixer? Maybe you've searched the Internet for a free cement mixer plan?
Actually mixing cement by hand is a very rewarding experience. I remember my father teaching me how to mix cement by hand in a bucket. That was 38 years ago.
The process of mixing the cement has not changed.
To mix Concrete with a half inch drill, There's a few things you're going to need. First you need a half-inch variable speed drill. You will require a mixing propeller, A drywall mixer will do. A 5 gallon pail. Cement,
Either Portland ready mix or a mason ready mixed depending upon your application. Water, preferably with a garden hose. Actually two pails is better than one. So you have a half-inch drill and you have fixed the mixing propeller to the half-inch drill. Next put about 2 to 3 inches of water in the bottom of the 5 gallon pal.
Insert the drywall mixer into the pal. It helps if you can lean this apparatus with the drill up against something like a wall . Now in a separate pail open up a bag of concrete and dump it into the pail. Take
your pail of ready mix and dump maybe half of it into the pail of water with the electric mixer and oh yes don't forget to plug in the drill. Now turn the drill on holding it carefully at a very slow speed. You may have to hold the pale in between your feet to keep it from rotating at first. Now the cement and water are mixing nicely. At this point it's probably wet and you can add some more dry cement mix to the pal and do so.
It is recommended that you mix the mortar for at least two minutes.
Once the cement has been mixed and is the proper consistency turn off the drill and remove the propeller from the pail.
Okay great. The next thing to do is to wait a couple of minutes the for the cement to settle in the pail.
Two minutes is a good time. Now you can take your cement in the 5 gallon pail carry it to where you are using it and pour it.
You can use the same configuration of half-inch drill and mixing propeller to mix cement for posts in a post hole. Let's say you want to mix cement for post-holes. Or maybe you have a Sona tube in the corner of your deck. It's very simple to first pour water into the bottom of the hole. Insert the drill propeller into the whole. Add some cement from the ready mixed bag directly into the hole turn on the mixer drill and start mixing it in the water that's in there. If you have a garden hose handy you continually add water or cement as needed to the consistency you desire.
Continue moving the propeller up and the cement up until you reach the top. In this way you can mix cement with a half-inch trail in the Sona tube without having to purchase a mixer.
Good luck and happy mixing.
