Sleep apnea is serious and can induce long term, serious health problems if not treated. CPAP is an effective treatment for sleep apnea if you stick with it. There are four tricks that will definitely help any CPAP user; keep the hose out of the way, don't turn the humidifier up too high, don't over tighten your CPAP head straps, and control your sleep environment.
It is important to understand that sleep apnea is a serious condition. If unattended the National Institutes of Health says that sleep apnea increase the risk of high blood pressure, heart attacks, stroke, obesity, diabetes, and irregular heartbeats. When asked about alternatives to CPAP one Ear, Nose, and Throat doctor presented a puzzled look and asked why you wouldn't use a CPAP since it is effective and doesn't require surgery.
Because it is hard to adjust to using a CPAP, the reason many people stop using a CPAP is. Hard, as a matter of fact, that reports indicate 40 % of CPAP users stop using their CPAP. The problem is after a person is diagnosed with sleep apnea by a sleep study they are outfitted for a few minutes (while sitting upright) with a mask or nasal pillow and sent on their way with a brief tract to help them adjust to their CPAP equipment. This is when most people fail. They put on their CPAP for the first time, lay down, and try to wear it for eight hours. , if they sleep that night they don't sleep well.. They get wrapped up in their CPAP hose, they mask rubs their nose raw, and they get little water droplets up their nose all night. After a few days or months of this they give up and stop using their CPAP because the medical centers and doctors don't give a person the help and support they need to make it through this very hard adjustment.
Here are a tips (in order of importance to help you enjoy your CPAP) that can make a big difference.
There are lots of tools to help manage your hose but one of the biggest things to improve your sleep will be to do something to manage your hose. You can make your own system or purchase a stand or a CPAP pillow. If you notice your hose throughout the night, that means it is waking you throughout the night and detracting from your sleep.
If you can breath air all day without a humidifier why do you need one at night? For some, their mouth will get very dry because the mouth opens up while you sleep and air rushes out. It comfortably keeps your mouth shut and keeps your mouth from drying out through the night.
Don't over-tighten your straps. , if you do it will rub your nose raw which can be painful.. Get your straps just tight enough to keep the seal between the mask and your face. Because your hose is pulling your mask off, if you keep having leaks throughout the night it could be. Go back to step one and figure out how to keep your CPAP hose under control.
Keep your room clean, cool, and dark. Because using a CPAP can add extra anxiety about sleep, you want to make your bedroom a very easy place to sleep. Clean your room - an uncluttered room is a good room to sleep in. Keep it cool because cool rooms produce better sleep. If you can use your climate control to maintain that temperature so you don't get colder as the night goes on and the temperature outside drops (for those who sleep with windows open). Darkness is your friend at night. The body needs strong day and night signals to sleep well. During the day you need some good direct sun exposure or a special sun therapy lamp. At night, you need good darkness both before you go to bed and after you are in bed. Use a sleeping mask over your eyes if you can't get your room dark enough. Bonus: if you wake up because of sounds find a good set of soft earplugs and wear them at night.
If you master these four simple and powerful principles you will enjoy your CPAP, sleep better, and feel better. Sleep apnea is serious and sleep is probably more important than any of us appreciate. Pay attention to your sleep, what wakes you, and take action to improve your sleep. It may effect much more than your energy levels and could be the easiest thing you can do to improve your health.
