Taking your child from relying on diapers to using the potty is a tricky time that can require many attempts before your child is completely acclimated to exclusively using the potty. We obviously want this process to be as efficient and stress-free as possible, for both us and our children.
Unfortunately, there just isn't a one-size-fits-all strategy for potty training our children. Every child will respond to our training approaches a little differently and the method that works to train one child may be completely ineffective for the next.
As I experienced with my 2nd child, some kids will train themselves by simply emulating the actions of their older brothers and sisters. Other children will require positive and negative reinforcements. For example, my oldest would get a Hershey's Kiss whenever she'd go on the potty and that "bribing" method worked wonders for her.
When she'd have an accident, my wife and I would let her know our disappointment. Of course, it's important not to be excessively harsh. We're talking about potty training here, not an offense deserving of capital punishment. :)
And remember, you're not just teaching your child how to use the toilet. You're teaching them how to recognize the sensations associated with having to go and knowing what to do whenever they experience these sensations.
When to Start Potty Training
As with everything else pertaining to a child's development, the age at which each child is ready to be potty trained is not an exact science. Some will be ready as early as 15 months and others may not take to it until 30-36 months.
If your child isn't interested in potty training as soon as he or she turns 2, don't get your panties in a bunch just yet. Some kids just take a little longer to gain an interest in using the potty.
I have even heard of some children not being potty trained into their 4th year on this earth. As frustrating as this may have been on the parents, these kids still went on to lead normal lives.
Feeling out when your child is ready for potty training requires some trial and error. If your child is extremely resistant to it, and you have to fight with them to sit on the potty, it's probably better to put it off for another month or two before giving it another go. Potty training your child isn't worth starting World War III over.
As a general rule, the most successful time to begin potty training your child is when the child begins showing an interest in it. Suggest for your child to sit on the potty and see how they react. If they respond by being eager to sit on potty, this may be an indication that they're ready.
On the other hand, if they fight you tooth and nail, this is a good indication that it's better to put it off for a little while as your child warms up to the idea of using the potty.
A Few Final Helpful Potty Training Tips
Before I wrap up, I want to provide you with a few tips that will help your time potty training your child to be a little less stressful and increase your chance of success:
- Offer plenty of praise and encouragement.
- If they don't take to their kid potty seat, try the normal toilet. Some kids will feel better about using the same potty mommy and daddy use.
- Try not to lose your temper. Your child will pick up on this and will only make them more resistant to your efforts.
- Buy clothes that will be easy to remove and put back on. You'll be undressing and putting your child on the potty frequently. You might as well make this process as simple as possible.
Put these tips to use and your child will be trading in those diapers in no time – even if it doesn't happen as quickly and painlessly as you would like.
