CPAP stands for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP). What you will see to the left is a CPAP machine, humidifier, air hose, and nose pillow.
We'll describe the basics of the CPAP, CPAP humidifier, nose, and hose pillow in this post and the setup without the humidifier in another post.
The CPAP machine is connected to the CPAP hose and nose pillow. The air is moved through the CPAP machine, through the humidifier where it is moistened, through the tube, and to the nose via the nose pillow (same concept applies to A CPAP mask at the end). The CPAP machine and CPAP humidifier easily snap together connecting a power connection and air connection between the two.
CPAP users opt for the humidifier because they feel the air is too dry and is uncomfortable. If you are using a nose pillow or mask that doesn't cover your mouth this may also be due to your mouth being open and air leaking out, which dries it out badly.
A CPAP machine, CPAP hose, nose pillow, and straps is used when the air isn't uncomfortably dry and a humidifier isn't required. When traveling since there are less parts/bulk though most travel bags will have a pocket for the humidifier, this configuration is easier to deal with. This unit is also easier to manage because you don't have to wash out and replace the humidifier reservoir. The down-side is the dryness of the air. Without the humidifier, the air is only as moist or dry as the ambient air. If you can breath the air all day long without needing it humidified, why do you need it humidified when you use your CPAP? The answers may vary for each CPAP user. Some may find the air rushes into the nose and airway more forcefully with a CPAP and so the dry air may be overwhelming and uncomfortable. These are good candidates for a humidifier. Other users may find their mouth gets very dry - these are not always good candidates for CPAP humidifiers. Here's why, the mouth dryness can often be caused by air leaking out of the mouth while you sleep. This means as you sleep dry air is passing through your mouth drying it out all night. The results can be very uncomfortable. To compensate, many CPAP mask and nose pillow users will humidify the air. Since their mouth is still dry they continue to crank up their humidifier. This forms water droplets in the CPAP hose and eventually gets water in your nose while you sleep which is a bad experience. The answer, however, isn't to increase the humidity for these CPAP users. These users should look at a strap to keep their mouth shut.
The downside is the air is only as humid as the ambient air - which is probably good enough for most people.
